A Favourite Morning Practice
April is National Poetry Month in the U.S. It’s a time to celebrate poetry, to revisit a favourite poem, and to find new ones to nourish your heart and soul.
One of my favourite morning practices is to read and write poetry. As a young man, I was too busy for poetry. Too wilful. And too headstrong. But over time, poems started to get through my defences, and to change me.
For example, when I first encountered Walt Whitman’s?Song of Myself, I stumbled across this line: “I loaf and invite my soul.” These six simple words somehow gave me permission to slow down and enjoy my life.
My book?Finding Love Everywhere , features 67? wisdom poems penned by me, plus a series of essays on poetry, creativity, and inspiration. In it I write,
“The mission of poetry is to inspire,” said Hazrat Inayat Kahn, the Sufi mystic. That’s why we recite poetry at inaugurations, blessing ceremonies, and other important occasions. That’s why some poems turn into prayers. Nelson Mandela discovered the poem “Invictus,” by William Ernest Henley, while in prison. It’s a short poem, just four stanzas long. He committed it to memory. It became his touchstone. He recited it daily so as to access the inspiration and resilience he needed for his leadership and the challenges of the day.
Poems can often appear in your life like angels. They find you when you most need them. They bring comfort. They offer supernatural aid. They often appear out of nowhere.
Do you have a favourite poem? If you had to pick one, what would you choose?
For me, the best poems are a meditation, an invitation, and a call to action. They encourage you to live your day in a different way.
Here is one of my poems from my collection?Finding Love Everywhere. It’s called The?I AM:
Put a picture of Jesus in your
wallet, next to your Amex
card, your dollar bills, and
everything else in there.
Put a tattoo of the Buddha on
your body somewhere. No
one need ever know, unless
you want them to.

Print the word love on your
T-shirt. Hang a sacred heart on
the kitchen wall. Wear holy
beads like jewelry.
Download the Rumi app for
poetry on the go.
Buy angels, buy crystals, buy a rainbow,
and a Tibetan bowl. Get all the
spiritual stuff you can.
Do what you must do until you
can trust that you are the
Christ, the Buddha, the love,
and that you are the I AM.
Before the day is through, take some time to revisit a favourite poem, or Google “inspirational poetry”, or read Mary Oliver’s?Summer Day, or write your own poem.
I wish you a beautiful day.
