Wednesday Wisdom: The Power of Silence
This week I find myself without a voice. Literally not figuratively. And it has given me the opportunity to revel in the idea of silence and the impact that it holds in a variety of ways.
Silence is golden we’re told as children. Truly, it is an invaluable commodity that we rarely gift ourselves. The ability to be still and silent. To hear the world around us without pursuing the desire to respond.?Yet, being silent can grant us so many opportunities. The opportunity to listen, to reflect, to think before engaging. Even just the briefest of silent pauses can spare us from saying the wrong thing or taking incorrect action.
In business, by taking the time to stay silent – to listen rather than respond – we allow ourselves the ability to hear what our colleagues, our manager, our customers have to say. We grant ourselves time to absorb what is being presented to us. In taking even the briefest moments of silence, we can listen fully, reflect responsibly, and respond rationally. In life, it is the same. But more so it may allow you a better appreciation to the smallest of calming moments in your day. Consider your first sip of coffee in the morning. Or the moment you take to hug a loved one. Have you ever noticed how we go silent for just that brief period, so that we cherish the act? Show the smallest of appreciation with an equally small moment of silence?
Neal Gittleman is the provider of our WW video today, and shares the impact that silence can have: The Power of Silence. I hope that you are able to enjoy in particular the opportunity for reflection given during his talk.?
“I remind myself every morning: Nothing I say this day will teach me anything. So if I’m going to learn, I must do it by listening.” – Larry King
I hope today you are granted the chance to be silent. To listen without responding. To hear the stories, the complaints, the praise being shared with you. To embrace the subtlety of a pause. To learn from quiet rest.
Warm regards on this Wednesday,
