Wednesday – Where Are You Captain Penny? - August 11, 2021

Life has gotten a lot more complicated has it not? Anyone remember Captain Penny, the host of a kid’s cartoon show late in the afternoon which aired from 1955 to 1971 broadcast in Cleveland, Ohio? He used to end the program with this…"You can fool some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time, but you can’t fool Mom. She's pretty nice and she's pretty smart. If you do what Mom says you won't go far wrong."?

I bring this up today as I remember how smart both my parents were. Unfortunately, for most of us we realize this in our late twenty’s or thirties and for some of us much later in life. For them, life was simpler then of course but they both had life experiences like growing up during the Great Depression, knew family members who served in World War II and the Korean War and some who never made it back. They moved from the Boston area to Akron for new job opportunities and then my sister and I came along.

They were focused on keeping a roof over our heads, paying bills, keeping out of debt and saving money for the future. We never missed a parade and always stood for the Flag to honor those that had served our Country. We were taught that we were no better than our neighbor and that money or fame did not place you above anyone else. As far as discrimination, my father experienced this first hand at a number the major rubber companies that discriminated on the basis of religious faith. Does not seem like a big deal now but that prevented my father from getting his dream job in human resources. That always haunted him.

My first boyhood friend was a black kid named Joseph and I knew his skin color was different than mine but all I cared about was his playing hide-and-seek and other kid games when you are five years old. We had some great times and I wonder if he became a fireman as that is all he ever talked about! I hope that he did.

When my father died unexpectedly we had no insurance, $100,000 medical bill and mom had to go to work which left my 13 year old sister in charge of her 11 year old brother – me! We both decided to help mom so we both got jobs. Her babysitting and me with my newspaper route. Our family was flat broke but mom was too proud to take any government assistance even though we had our electric, gas and phone disconnected more than just a few times and of course notices from the bank that we had not paid the mortgage. When it came to skipping meals or just having the bare minimum it was not by choice. Farmers in the area would let us gather a few apples and blueberries and I remember one giving us a rabbit to eat. We really did not know we were poor.
