The Wedding Planner for Construction

The Wedding Planner for Construction

My wife describes me as a "Wedding Planner for Construction". Years at University, more years grinding out cost estimates and more years still structuring and negotiating "BILLION DOLLAR DEALS", and she boils it down to this. Sadly, she might just have a point.

I've found through my 15 year career so far, every time I've been asked by someone to describe what I do, I'm hit with what feels like an eternal two seconds as I try to explain what amounts to a very complex role in the middle of construction and development projects.

I'm not an Engineer, I'm not an estimator (any more) and I'm not an architect.... oh and I'm not "on the tools", so what do I do?

I studied Quantity Surveying, an ancient profession which has little to no recognition with the dads at soccer practice, and even less recognition in US construction industry.

An accountant for the construction industry? Not quite.

Enter...the wedding planner

I first started to suspect my wife Anita was onto something when I thought back to our own wedding experience back in 2015.

In 2012, we first visited Verona, Italy as a couple. Very quickly, we knew that was where we wanted to be married. But we were generally daunted with only a high-school level command of Italian.

Now, many would have said it was possible to muddle through and arrange a wedding, but from Australia? We quickly realized we needed help. No matter how many weddings we had been to and experienced, how many shows we had watched, we hadn't lived through the organizational complexities of arranging our own, nor in a foreign country. We also had a very fixed budget and didn't want to be solely responsible for sending money back and forth, worried about costs escalating.

We very quickly realized we were out of our depth. We knew what we wanted as an outcome - an incredible family focused experience - but we didn't know how to get there. We identified the need for a Wedding Planner - enter Claudia Martinelli.

"I help couples live the period of wedding planning in a serene and stress free way, to get to the big day with more energy and without unnecessary worries."

Claudia worked on our behalf for a specific fixed fee, identifying vendors, potential venues, and channeling our decision making. She identified a budget and sub-budgets within that. We gave her our feedback and objectives for the event and she developed a scope and options from that. The whole time, she acted on our behalf independently, but accessing better negotiation terms than we could have doorstepping restaurants and florists in Verona ourselves.

Her experience and approach smoothed the whole process for us, we made staged payments and eventually the day came. During the course of the day she managed vendors, troubleshooted issues with our guests and dealt with conflict from a neighbor who didn't appreciate our Bagpipe entrance :).

Our wedding day was a dream.

I deliver the same service as Claudia, but for individuals, companies and institutions who are embarking upon construction projects.

It's my job to listen to your objectives, develop a budget, manage the engagement of contractors and the successful delivery of project (aka the wedding day).

In conclusion:

My name is Adam, and I am a Wedding Planner of Construction.

So next time you want to undertake a project without advisors, or you make a call for a proposal for a project manager or cost manager, or you ask "what do they even do?", just think:

  • Do you know the language?
  • Can you negotiate with vendors as well?
  • Do you want to be stressed out about the details or focused on the big day?
  • What value can you get from making someone else accountable for a successful wedding/project?
