Wedding Photographer Cardiff - A passion!
Paul Cornish
Food Photographer, Headshot Specialist, Photographer of Shiny Things (products).
As I sit here and write this, I think back over several hundred weddings that I have photographed, some solo, but most with my partner (both life and business) Jacs. We have many stories that we could tell and that's one of the things we take from this... funny things, passionate things, emotions both high from the day itself and low from missed loved ones.
You see, each wedding is different. When we photograph a wedding at Studio Cwtch we don't do it to a formula other than a wedding day has a certain flow to it. Preparations, ceremony, mingling, food and a party... interwoven within that are all the nuances that make the wedding truly unique. So we work in a unique way. Both Jac and myself are classically trained, both coming from the days of film when you had to get the shot, you couldn't look at the back of a camera and you certainly couldn't take a thousand shots hoping you had one decent one!
For us, photography is still an art. Seeing the image amongst all the confusion, looking for the light that will sculpt and define a face, making sure the exposure is right so the details of that very white dress aren't lost... these things don't happen by accident, they aren't something that simply shooting five thousand images will capture. We don't rely on luck, we rely on solid foundations, of doing something the right way.
What does this mean for you, that person wanting a beautiful record of the best day of their lives. Well, it means that we care, really care that the photographs we capture will give you stunning memories. Let me break it down for you.
Why would you book a professional photographer?
- Skill - The photographs you see in a professional album don't happen by accident. The images are looked for, timed to perfection and exposed correctly.
- Backup - A professional will have multiple kit items, more than one camera, and lens, backup flash guns and even (at least in our case) backup photographers ready to step in should something horrible happen! Oh yes and at the end of it all, your images are backed up too!
- Insurance - It's becoming a minefield and any photographer SHOULD have the correct PI (Professional Indemnity) and PL (Professional Liability) cover.
- Personality - It's key... if you want someone at your wedding, photographing all of it, that means they are going to be around for a fair bit of your day. Make absolutely sure you click with them... sense of humour, language their take on your day... and go back to skill... ask to see three albums, at least and if possible, a complete wedding day or two too... either at your venue or one like it!
- The little things - Are their marketing materials in line with the images, ask them about posing, and natural, guided and controlled images. Each thing is different and it depends on what you want at the end as to what you ask. But look at them, are they significantly overweight or physically hampered... a wedding day is very hard work and you need someone able to get around quickly but to be able to fade into the background when necessary or appropriate. Are they a lot shorter than you... a major disadvantage as a LOT of your photographs will be looking up your nose... this affects perspective and gives a tilt to all the images, trust me it's a lot easier to bend down than it is to levitate!
- Recommendations - Check their reviews... do they have any, are they all good. Ask for numbers from previous clients and take references.
- Availability - Is your photographer full time? I know it sounds off but a lot of photographers start out by working a week day job and doing weddings on a weekend or take holiday for it. If your photographer does something else, who will win on your day if their boss says... someone has called in sick, I need you! Even if they do turn up, will their mind be on your wedding or on their other job.
- Professional courtesy - Will the photographer work with your video person? Does the priest / vicar know them, have they worked your venue before? We have never had a run in with any other professional, we take pride in the fact that we can work with anyone else that is a part of your day... its YOUR day, not ours! Oh and we are never late bringing you back to the venue for sit down time!!!
- It is YOUR day - We don't ask for an hour of your time, to whisk you away from your guests and not see them between the ceremony and the wedding breakfast... it's a time to be WITH your family and friends so we aim to get the groups done fast and for you to have two ten minute sessions with us where (because there are two of us) we allow you to be natural and sometimes ask for a hand to be moved or a position to be altered keeping a natural flow to the images we produce, giving you space but equally getting double the number of beautiful shots, some wide angle, some close in.
- Our relationship - It blossoms... we have lots of previous wedding couples we now call friends... this happens because we don't just accept a booking and then ignore you until your day, we have conversations on the phone, we are there for you to ask questions of and we even help you with choosing other people for your day if you want us to! Finally, we get together at least once before the day to go over the final details, to check the running order and to make sure we all know where we should be at what time (roughly - after all it is a wedding).
I hope that has given you an insight into what you can expect from a professional wedding photographer... and we hope that you choose to talk to us at Studio Cwtch to find out what we can do for you... after all, its nice to have a conversation :)
