#1 Run-on Navigation Menus
Your navigation menu is the banner at the top with your logo and the website pages. It's important to use no more than 6 main headings here (the rest can be part of sub-menus). The reason for this is you don't want to overwhelm your site visitor with a ton of different link possibilities, you want to streamline their journey and have every page on your site be logically organized to make it easy for them to find the info they're interested in.
I've seen some DIY websites stretch over 3 whole rows of text! This is a no-no you definitely want to keep it to just one row. Here are a couple of examples of my web design before & after screenshots showing the menu fix:
#2 Dead Links
It's important to check over your website after you've hit publish and test all of the links to make sure they're set up correctly. Having dead links on your website will lead to client frustration and distrust, you don't want your potential client thinking "if they haven't made sure their website buttons work then how high quality can their other work really be!"
#3 Template Content that hasn't been replaced
If you used a template to make your website you have to make sure that all the content has been replaced with your own and there isn't any text or buttons that you haven't updated from the template version.
#4 Favicons that haven't been replaced
The favicon of your website goes into these 2 spots on a web browser like Chrome:
In the examples above you are seeing the SquareSpace logo instead of the client's. This interferes with your brand experience. You want everything on your website to look professional so that your brand looks high-end and high-quality to potential clients. Plus you don't want to be advertising SquareSpace to everyone online, you want to be advertising your own business! If you got a a professional brand identity & logo design then you should have a Favicon version of your logo that needs to be uploaded in the Favicon settings of your website ??
I would love to hear your thoughts! What are some mistakes you've noticed when browsing other websites?
