Website Importance By Industry: Essential vs Necessary
All businesses should have an online presence- but what makes it important for yours?

Website Importance By Industry: Essential vs Necessary

I get asked this question a lot:

"Most of my leads come from ____ (social media, word-of-mouth referrals, ads)...

Do I even need a website?"

In reality, it could depend.

No business technically "needs" any one piece of marketing to exist. This includes your website presence.

But...

it is easier to run a marathon with a pair of shoes on.

They help companies reach new customers, share their stories, and grow their impact. A website serves as a virtual storefront, open 24/7, giving potential clients or customers a place to learn about your offerings and values.

However, not every industry needs to invest heavily in creating the perfect website. Some industries require a robust online presence ("essential"), while others might only need a simple, functional site ("necessary").

At MMG Design , we specialize in creating agency-quality websites for businesses looking to make a strong impression online. Whether your industry falls into the “essential” or “necessary” category, we can help you determine the right approach to meet your goals and fit your budget. ??

"Essential" Industries

1. E-Commerce

E-commerce businesses rely entirely on their websites to generate sales. A high-functioning, user-friendly site is crucial for converting visitors into customers. (Pictured: Gymshark )

2. Real Estate

Real estate agents and agencies need a professional website to showcase listings, attract buyers and sellers, and build credibility in a competitive market. (Pictured: HappyNest Homes Group @ Keller Williams Consultants Realty )

3. Legal Services

Law firms must have a website that establishes trust, provides information about services, and helps clients find legal assistance quickly and easily. (Pictured: Bricker and Graydon )

4. Healthcare

Hospitals, clinics, and private practices depend on their websites to provide essential information, schedule appointments, and offer patient resources. (Pictured; CoverMyMeds )

5. Financial Services

Banks, credit unions, and financial advisors need secure, well-designed websites to manage customer accounts, provide financial advice, and establish trust. (Pictured: Windsor Advisory Group )

6. Restaurants and Hospitality

For restaurants and hotels, a website is key to sharing menus, booking reservations, and offering an enticing glimpse of the customer experience.

7. Tech Startups

Tech companies must have cutting-edge websites to attract investors, showcase innovation, and communicate their brand’s vision to a global audience.

(I did a deep dive on these in last week's newsletter )

8. Education and E-Learning

Schools, universities, and online learning platforms need dynamic websites to engage students, offer resources, and manage online courses. (Pictured: Andy's alma mater The University of Findlay )

9. Nonprofits

Nonprofit organizations use their websites to share their mission, collect donations, and mobilize supporters. (Pictured: United Way of Central Ohio )

10. Marketing Agencies

Marketing and creative agencies must have a strong online presence to demonstrate their capabilities, attract clients, and showcase their work. (Pictured: The Media Captain in Cbus!)

"Necessary" Industries

1. Local Service Providers

Local businesses like plumbers, electricians, and landscapers benefit from having a website, but word-of-mouth and local advertising often drive their success. (Pictured: Apex Pros Plumbing, Electric, Heating and Air )

2. Artisan and Craft Businesses

While it’s helpful for artisans to have a website to display their work, many rely on platforms like Etsy or social media to reach customers. (Pictured: @happygolucky in Short North Columbus

3. Freelancers

Freelancers may use simple websites to showcase portfolios, but platforms like LinkedIn or Upwork often serve as primary sources of clients. (Pictured: Talented Friend Trevor Headings )

4. Small Retail Stores

Small, local retail shops can get by with a basic website, as much of their business is driven by foot traffic and community presence. (Pictured: Union County Tourism )

5. Auto Repair Shops

Auto repair businesses benefit from a website for basic information, but many customers come through referrals or simply by driving by. (Pictured: ER Autocare in Ohio)

6. Personal Trainers

Personal trainers may have a website, but social media and word-of-mouth often play a bigger role in client acquisition. (Pictured: Mesh Fitness in Dublin)

7. Cafes and Coffee Shops

While a website can help cafes with menus and hours, much of their business comes from walk-ins and loyal customers. (Pictured: Qahwah House in Columbus)

8. Contemporaries, Artists, Musicians

Artists and musicians might maintain a website, but their presence on social media and streaming platforms often does more to grow their audience. (Pictured: @Actor's Theater of Columbus )

9. Independent Consultants

Consultants can benefit from a website to outline their services, but networks, branding, and referrals are usually often more effective in landing clients than SEO. Nathan Jameson is an example of someone who manages his brand well both online and on social.

10. Hobby Clubs and Associations

Hobby clubs may use a simple website for meeting information, but much of their engagement comes from in-person gatherings and word-of-mouth. (Pictured: Columbus Young Professionals (CYP) Club )

Notice... every industry on this list still has examples of stunning websites.

And these no doubt play a huge part in the effectiveness of their marketing efforts and ability to scale, tell their

Great summary, that I agree with! No business "needs" a website, but having one will definitely be an advantage in today's digital world. Well probably not only an advantage, but if you don't have one it's an actual disadvantage compared to your competitors. From our own experience one of the very first steps we take in our customer journey is look up businesses, service providers, etc. online. We want to see who they are, what they do, if they have products/services that can solve our "problems" and if we can trust them (trust is such a huge topic online). So a website does more than show your company and service. It builds trust, authority and a memorable identity.
