WebRTC on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
WebRTC on iPhone, iPad and Mac, finally!
Back in 2010, when I first heard of WebRTC, it was just an IETF draft... but I immediately got a vision, and co-founded Bistri right away on the bet that one day, video calling someone would be as simple as a click on a link, from any browser, any device, anywhere.
A few dates along the way that I will always remember...
- June 1, 2011, Google made available their first contribution to the project.
- November 2012, I'm invited to join the W3C :o)
- February 2013, Hello Chrome, it's Firefox calling!
- January, 2017, WebRTC 1.0 support on Microsoft Edge.
7 years later, here we are, the last but not the least of the browsers, Safari, finally support WebRTC. The best part of this announcement? iOS of course, which means iPhone, iPad, and why not a near future, Apple TV!
In a few hours, all the vendors start to play with it, and implement the support of Safari in their solutions: Tokbox, Bluejeans, ...
as the WebKit community starts to speak out:
as well as the Safari team, which is very very very rare!!!
but this is just the beginning of a new chapter, and we need the entire developer community to get the real ubiquity that the enterprise world needs, so please give your feedback to the WebKit team, file bugs when you find some, tweet @webkit...
