Webinar: Women’s Recovery—New Tools for Professionals
Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation
Leading nonprofit system of care for addiction/mental health—Consistency. Integrity. Impeccable care.
In this upcoming professional’s webinar, author and women’s advocate Stephanie S. Covington, PhD, LCSW, shares 35 years’ worth of professional insights and experience, along with new tools and improved resources for gender- and trauma-responsive care.
Why We Need to Modernize Our Care
When Alcoholics Anonymous was founded nearly 90 years ago, most of the participants were men, and many of our country’s medical practices were based around men’s minds, bodies and health. Intending to address those discrepancies in 1994, Stephanie S. Covington, PhD, LCSW, wrote A Woman’s Way through the Twelve Steps, a formative first step toward a more holistic understanding of women’s experiences in addiction and recovery.
What’s Next?
Although our understanding of women’s health has greatly matured over the past 30 years, along with our healing capacity as professionals, we’re still learning and adjusting to emerging best practices, which should include gender- and trauma-responsive care for women and gender-expansive folks everywhere.
As it stands:
·???????? Many women are struggling with a history of trauma
·???????? Women’s rate of drinking is increasing more than men’s
·???????? Young women represent the majority of binge drinkers
·???????? Opioids are disproportionately impacting women
What tools have we acquired to help them process trauma and commit to Twelve Step recovery? And how do we hold more space for the beautiful breadth and depth of their experiences and humanity?

1 年Yes, I've had the privilege of attending several of Dr. Covington's trainings. The voices of women in recovery and the importance of empowering women are key factors in the success of women receiving quality care. When the voices of women are heard and when we honor our own legacies together we can support others. Bravo to her and all who support women seeking treatment and recovery.
