Dr Diane O Doherty, Research Officer at The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (The ASI) writes about the next webinar in the ‘Dementia Dialogues: Breaking Down Research’ Series which focuses on community support for people with Young-onset Dementia (YOD). ?
People with YOD, diagnosed before the age of 65, face challenges that differ from those experienced by older individuals with the condition. Many are still in active employment, driving, managing financial responsibilities, and raising young families.?
In 2022, The ASI commissioned research to better understand how best to support those affected by YOD. ?
There are approximately more than 5,000 people living with YOD, though the actual number is likely to be higher. Prevalence is increasing and we know that this cohort needs age and stage appropriate supports and services. ?
The ASI is dedicated to supporting those with YOD. In 2024, The ASI opened two Activity Lodges, one in its Bessboro Day Centre in Cork, and one in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford providing those affected an opportunity to meet socially and engage in community activities tailored to their interests and with their peers.?
Many newly diagnosed with YOD continue to work and live in their local communities for several years. Therefore, it is crucial that we understand how to harness community information and supports, which led to researchers creating a guidance document for health professionals, community leaders and those working in local services on how best they can support service users living with young onset dementia. ?
For the final instalment of our Dementia Dialogues webinar, we are thrilled to welcome Dr Siobhán Fox and Dr Caroline Kilty from University College Cork who are the lead authors on this important research. They will present briefly on this topic, sharing insights from this research and how best to implement it in local communities. ?
