One of the things that I miss about international teaching is the holidays. I was a teacher and an administrator, but I liked being able to walk away for a week or two and just forget everything and go hiking in the Annapurna region in Nepal or backpacking the beach towns in Mexico. I know that not every international educator has the luxury of doing that, at least not all of the time, but for the most part you do have well defined holidays. That is not as much the case when you are self-employed. You always have the pressure of feeling like you should be working on something. Also, we have to work when the work is there because we are not always that lucky to have work year-round. However, one thing that I have learned as I have gotten older is that it is very important to take time to stop and rest and give yourself the opportunity to rejuvenate. The thing that I live by now is that if you don’t take yourself, no one is going to do it for you. Also, I really love the feeling of coming back from a well-earned break and feeling inspired like when I used to go to professional development conferences when I was teaching. It is good not only to give your body time to rest but also to give your mind time to think. My father used to always tell me when I was a young teacher starting out, to “take time to stop and smell the roses.” I would respond with things like sure, sure old man. I will, I will. I don’t think I did. I wished I had listened to him earlier.
So, all of this is to say that I hope that all of you have a good break during Semana Santa, Easter holidays or Ramadan, whatever it is that you celebrate. Make sure to take some time to rest and just let your mind wander. If Stephen Covey taught us anything in the 90s, it was that we need to take time to “sharpen the saw”. This is a fitting analogy because the whole point was about how much harder you had to push and work with a dull saw but if you took time to sharpen the saw your task would be so much easier and you would be more productive. I know that educators worry so much about giving all they can to their students but remember that you can only do your best to help them when you have first taken care of yourself. Take this time to put yourself first because if you don’t, no one else will.
