#3 DDD: Web3 or still Web2.5?

On this third edition of the Digital Disruption Dispatch (DDD), we delve into the cutting-edge realm of Web3, exploring its potential to reshape industries and revolutionize the digital landscape. Is it really more than a buzzword, and if so, why? should businesses pay attention to it?

When someone says Web3, others may automatically link it to crypto, blockchain, new games, NFT, and more. And they are all correct!

What is Web3?

The internet of everyone

Web3 represents the next evolution of the internet (yes, we are already living with Web2), built on decentralized blockchain technology. Unlike its predecessors, Web3 aims to shift control from centralized entities to users themselves, offering greater transparency, security, and autonomy.

In essence, Web3 envisions a digital landscape where users have ownership and control over their data and digital assets, free from the influence of intermediaries. These entities are, for example, social media platforms, online marketplaces, and financial institutions that act between users and their data or transactions.

In other words, Web3 proposes descentralization (the main key word for it!) and empowers users to manage their own information, which serves as the foundation for blockchain systems.

Web 1.0, Web 2.0, and are we there yet?

And... What is BlockChain?

Blockchain is like a digital ledger that stores information across many computers. Each piece of information, or "block," is linked to the one before it, forming a chain. This chain is secure and can't be changed once information is added to it. It's decentralized, meaning no single person or organization controls it. It's most famous for being used in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, but it can also be used for other things like tracking products in supply chains or verifying digital identities.

How is Web3 being used already?

As mentioned, blockchain is the core of Web3, and there are many exploration industries taking advantage of it.

  1. Decentralized Finance (DeFi): DeFi platforms are leveraging Web3 to create decentralized financial systems, offering services such as lending, borrowing, and trading without the need for traditional banks or financial institutions.
  2. NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens): Web3 has fueled the rise of NFTs, unique digital assets that can represent ownership of digital art, collectibles, and more. NFTs are revolutionizing the way we buy, sell, and interact with digital content.
  3. Decentralized Applications (dApps): Web3 enables the development and deployment of decentralized applications, or dApps, which run on blockchain networks instead of centralized servers. These dApps offer various functionalities, from social media and gaming to supply chain management and voting systems.

There is no way to get simpler than this.

Opportunities & Threats

While Web3 presents numerous opportunities for innovation and disruption, it also comes with its fair share of challenges, and anyone willing to take a shot should know both sides of the coin.

  • Opportunities: Web3 opens up new avenues for businesses to innovate, streamline processes, and create value for their customers. By embracing decentralized technologies, companies can enhance security, transparency, and efficiency in their operations.
  • Threats: The decentralized nature of Web3 also introduces risks such as regulatory uncertainty, security vulnerabilities, and scalability issues. Businesses must navigate these challenges carefully to ensure the successful adoption and implementation of Web3 technologies.

Why is it important for businesses to know?

In today's digital economy, understanding Web3 is essential for businesses looking to remain competitive and future-proof their operations. By embracing Web3 technologies, companies can:

  • Gain a Competitive Edge: Businesses that adopt Web3 early on can gain a competitive advantage by leveraging decentralized solutions to enhance their products, services, and customer experiences.
  • Enhance Security and Transparency: Web3 technologies offer improved security and transparency, allowing businesses to build trust with their customers and stakeholders.
  • Unlock New Revenue Streams: From DeFi platforms to NFT marketplaces, Web3 opens up new revenue streams and business models that were previously unthinkable in the centralized digital landscape.

But... Are we there yet?

The Web2.5

No. Many forces are driving and limiting adoption today, and the speed of adoption will depend on the intersection and final outcomes of these forces. Industries are intersted and exploring, but regulation and technical sophistication (VERY quick evolution that people cannot keep up with on learning deeply) are in the way.

This is leading to an intermediate (what an irony!): Web2.5: a technology that gives users the convenience, familiarity, and safety of Web2, while also delivering the ownership and decentralized aspects of Web3.

Web2.5 might just be the training wheels that are required globally to promote adoption of the new Web Way, or it might be a long-lasting system that enables users to function throughout the entire web. Nevertheless, Web3 Infrastructure keeps moving forward with its ability to sustain the internet as a whole, and legislation, customer preferences, and business procedures are likely to act as constraints in the future.

In conclusion, Web3 represents a paradigm shift in the way we interact with the internet and conduct business online. By understanding the principles of Web3 and embracing decentralized technologies, businesses can unlock new opportunities, mitigate risks, and pave the way for a more decentralized and inclusive digital future.
