The Web of Megatrend Investing

The Web of Megatrend Investing

I recently posted an article on the investment strategy in my company which led to many questions, so allow me to summarise what we actually do.

Absolute Return Partners (ARP) has now ventured into fund management, driven by a very thematic investment approach.? Seven megatrends, which we have identified over the last 10+ years, make up the heart of our approach to investing, and they are:

  • Last Stages of the Debt Supercycle
  • Changing Demographics
  • The Rising Gap between Rich and Poor
  • Rise of the East
  • The Era of Disruption
  • Climate Change
  • Globalisation 2.0

The beauty of megatrend investing is that the megatrends are virtually set in stone. ?Whether we like it out not, the climate is indeed changing, the wealth gap is indeed rising fast, the populace at large is indeed getting older, etc., etc.; i.e. you can, by constructing your portfolio appropriately, ensure that the wind is always in your back when investing.

Now, how do you invest in for example Climate Change? We have identified a number of investment themes that are a direct byproduct of Climate Change.? Take for example water. ?We invest in water companies that provide solutions to the growing problem of water scarcity. ?Water scarcity is a byproduct of Climate Change, but it is also a byproduct of Rise of the East, as rapidly rising living standards throughout Asia is putting enormous pressure on the region’s water resources. ?We particularly like investment themes that are associated with more than one megatrend, as that will only make the tail winds stronger. We currently have 11 such themes in our new investment vehicle – an Alternative Investment Fund (AIF), meaning that it is open to all qualified/professional investors.

Rules and regulations prevent me from going any further on the AIF but drop me a note if you have any other questions re our investment strategy.
