Web Design Case Study - Portsmouth Karate Club

https://www.portsmouthkarateclub.co.uk/

WHO ARE PORTSMOUTH KARATE CLUB?

Portsmouth Karate Club is the founding club in the southern region of England for Shotokan Karate. The club was founded by Sensei Dewey in the mid 60’s and from it the South of England Karate Union (SEKU) was formed. The club is also a founder member of the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB).

WHAT WAS REQUIRED?

Portsmouth Karate Club required us to create a new and custom website design with the aim to attract new potential Students and to showcase their training and community.

The Project encompassed:

? Custom website design with galleries of training and a calendar of upcoming events and training sessions.

? For the site to inspire the generation of new students and to supply information about the club.

WHAT DID WE DO?

We were given the trust and free reign to create a new and fresh design that we thought encompassed the Club’s values but that would also stand out from other martial arts clubs.

We wanted to create something that portrayed power and strength but would also appeal to all ages and incorporate eye catching visuals to keep any potential students on the page longer and result in a possible conversion. Here’s how we went about that:

? The use of triangles and angles in general are there to portray strength by either representing cuts in the page or were inspired by the idea of Karate Concrete Smashing with flying concrete chips (A Typical Karate Pastime!).

? We used the colours of Portsmouth to represent the local area and, whilst not our first choice, the outcome works to the website’s favour.

? We incorporated a calendar that could be updated at any time in the CMS by the Sensei’s to include any upcoming events or sessions.

? We also decided that new imagery would be very beneficial to the website to showcase the Club’s training sessions. We sent out our professional photographer to capture images and videos of the Club’s sessions of both adult and junior classes.

? We also incorporated illustration and typography to subtlety emphasise Karate elements throughout the website such as the loading GIF, the Karate stances in the Navigation Menu and the Karate words spread throughout the backgrounds of the web pages.

THE VERDICT

The boxChilli team are very pleased with the final outcome. This website posed new challenges with satisfying results that fit the brief. Our clients were also very happy with the outcome and are pleased with how the website represents the Club.

Exactly what we were going for with the shapes! We wanted a slightly grittier feeling for the video but next time we should take a video of both styles so we can choose later down the line. Thanks for the feedback Karen.

It's a great site. I don't know anything about Karate but the shapes you've used remind me of bits flying off wood that's been 'karated'. The one thing I would pick up on - was a tripod used for the video as it gives a smoother following of the subject.
