Web 3.0 - Are You Ready For It?

Have you heard about Web 3.0 but still not sure what it is, or this is the first time you are hearing about it? If both of these cases apply to you then please keep on reading.

Okay so first of all, if anyone of you might be thinking that Web 3.0 is a made-up term, let me clear the doubt right here that it is not. Web 3.0 is a futuristic technology that is going to become a reality soon.?

I am always very fascinated with technology and what can be a better topic to pick than Web 3.0, as I am side-by-side learning about this technology. But I promise I will keep it as easy to understand as I can, and have decided to write this article in laymen language for you all.

I will cover these topics in this blog -

  • Web 1.0
  • Web 2.0
  • Web 3.0
  • Conclusion

This image shows the Web 1.0 and Web 2.0, graphics - website owner, web, and user.

Web 1.0

Let's go back around 3 decades ago. Some history and background information is always great to learn before we try to learn about the new one.

  • Refers to the first stage of WWW, i.e. World Wide Web
  • Started in the 1990s.?
  • Was pretty disorganized and was limited in functionality
  • Can also be called the “read-only web”
  • Used by website owners to provide the information whoever needs it?
  • So, the website owner/webmaster will upload the information on the website, and internet users will go to the website to receive the information

Web2.0

Our current generation is on Web2.0.

  • Was started in the mid-2000s
  • Can also be called the “read-write web”
  • Provides interactive experience for users and facilitates user-generated content
  • For e.g. YouTube where users can contribute their content and other social media where users can upload their pictures and videos
  • A small group of large organizations e.g. Amazon, Facebook, Google, Twitter, etc. collect data about internet users and overtime have gathered a massive amount of information about internet users

This image shows the web1.0, web2.0, and web 3.0 and that web 1.0 and web 2.0 have read and write capability, while web 3.0 have intelligence along with read and write.

Web3.0

Here comes the fun part.?

  • Web 3.0 or Web 3 is a futuristic technology
  • Can also be called the “read-write-execute web” and will have an intelligence component to it.
  • Example of Intelligence - Every time you buy something on Amazon, the website’s algorithm will look at the other items that people who have purchased your product went on buy and then recommends that to you. So, think about what is going on here. The website is learning from other users what your preferred choices can be and then using it to recommend to you what you may like. In essence, the website itself is learning and becoming more intelligent. (Blockgeeks.com)
  • Semantic Web - When software applications can understand the data formatted in a language they can interpret (Semantic Markup), they will then understand the meaning or emotions of the content. Which will enable the software applications to apprehend the information both conceptually and contextually.
  • On Web 3.0 users and machines will be able to interact with the data.
  • It will fundamentally expand the scale & scope of both human and machine interactions far beyond what we can imagine today. (Medium.com)
  • The notion of Web 3.0? is formatting data to be understood by software applications — leads to the “execute” portion of the web 3.0 definition. (Practicalecommerce.com)
  • Another major change - Web 3.0 is going to be a decentralized system, I am not going to focus much on this part for the sake of simplicity. But Web 3.0 is supposed to be built on a system known as Blockchain, which is currently providing a solid backbone to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
  • “In a Web3 world, people control their own data and bounce around from social media to email to shopping using a single personalized account, creating a public record on the blockchain of all of that activity.”? (npr.org)

Conclusion

If your household is like mine, technology especially smart devices have already become an integral part of our life. This shows we are really good at accepting and utilizing advanced technologies and are actually enjoying them, although this experience comes with a cost (read frustration). Therefore, am really excited about Web 3.0 and am looking forward to this highly personalized and interactive experience to be offered by Web 3.0, this futuristic technology. How do you feel about it?
