The Web 3.0 Report - 29/09/23

The Web 3.0 Report is our fortnightly newsletter designed to help readers stay attuned to the latest in web 3.0, spanning AI advancements, web3 industry developments, and, naturally, AR/VR. In this edition, we focus on Coca Cola's new AR experience, Spotify leveraging AI for podcasts, the Writer' Guild bringing new regulation on AI and Meta's developer conference.

Coca Cola Creates seamless anamorphic billboard into AR experience

Coca-Cola Zero Sugar has launched the '#TakeATaste Now' campaign, featuring an innovative augmented reality (AR) giveaway. This initiative allows fans to experience Coca-Cola Zero Sugar in a unique way. It's the first large-scale two-way controlled DOOH and AR experience by Coca-Cola. Consumers can use their mobile devices to change a 3D anamorphic creative billboard into an even more immersive AR experience where users can reach for and grab their own coke zero to take home. This is a fantastic example of how new exciting innovations such as anamorphic 3D billboards can be seamlessly merged with other immersive tech such as web-based augmented reality to create truly unique AR experiences. Now that we’ve seen a case study merging the two technologies we’re eager to see what other innovative campaigns brands will be produced next utilising a similar tech stack. Just earlier this month the Butterfly Trail in Outernet London seemingly merged AR into their OOH mixed reality experience, just one more example of the latest innovations coming into the space leveraging similar technology.?

Spotify uses AI to clone top podcasters

Spotify is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to clone the voices of its top podcasters and use them to translate podcasts into other languages. Prominent podcast hosts like Lex Fridman and guests such as Kristen Bell now have podcasts on Spotify where they have conversations in languages like Spanish, French, and German, even though these interviews never took place in those languages. Spotify employed various AI technologies to create voice clones of these presenters, which were then used to narrate translated versions of the podcasts . This innovation enables users to enjoy popular podcasts they may have not gave the time for given the language barrier initially in place. Available for a limited number of Spanish podcasts, Spotify intends to expand this technology to include French and German, with plans to apply it to more podcasts in the future. The company aims to facilitate deeper connections between creators and listeners worldwide. Spotify has previously introduced AI-powered features, such as an AI DJ, and these developments are just the beginning, with the company looking for ways to enhance storytelling and user experiences through AI.

Writer’s strike ends with landmark legislation on AI generated content

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has ended its 148-day strike in the film industry after reaching an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) . Among the concessions gained by the writers is a set of limitations on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the industry. AI-generated material will not be considered source material, and AI cannot be used to undermine a writer's credit or separated rights. Writers can choose to use AI with company consent but cannot be required to do so. Companies must disclose if AI-generated material is used in materials given to the writer, and the WGA reserves the right to assert that exploiting writers' material to train AI is prohibited. The impact of these provisions on the industry's use of AI remains to be seen but could be first of many landmark regulations on AI content given its sudden entry into creative industries this last year. . The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) is now tasked with settling its strike with the studios and establishing its own AI and 3D scanning principles. This development marks a significant moment in the ongoing debate over AI's role in creative industries.

Meta’s Developer Conference - What to Expect

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is set to open the Connect developer conference, focusing on virtual and augmented reality (AR/VR) and artificial intelligence (AI). ? Meta is expected to unveil the Quest 3, its latest VR headset, and discuss AI chatbots and other tools to maintain user engagement amid competition from TikTok. Yoram Wurmser, an analyst at Insider Intelligence, noted that sustaining user engagement is Meta's primary challenge. Amid a drop in online advertising and economic uncertainty, Meta has cut over 20,000 jobs since November. Zuckerberg has labeled 2023 as the "year of efficiency," streamlining the workforce while hiring AI experts to support Meta's long-term vision. AI is central to this vision, with Meta releasing Llama 2, its next-gen AI language model, for research and commercial use. Meta aims to compete in the generative AI field offering AI models for download similar to competing tech giants such as Microsoft and Apple. It will interesting to see what products Meta plans on releasing to compete in the AI market.??
