Let's break down what is Web3?
Gavin Wood - author of the term "Web 3.0" (now shortened to #Web3) and co-founder of Ethereum - puts it this way:
"Web3 is really kind of an alternative vision of the web, where the services we use are not hosted by one provider company but are kind of purely algorithmic things that are hosted by everyone in some sense," Gavin told CNBC .?
To understand exactly what Gavin is describing, we'll take you back to the early days of the internet and try to make sense of it.?
The early Internet (now known as #Web1) was rife with personal web pages and data that were not controlled by any organisation. Popular technology companies such as HP Packard and even 雅虎 and 亚马逊 were just getting started in this era.?
In the days of #Web1, most Internet users and ISPs such as 美国在线 were unaware of the potential of the Internet as we know it today. For supporters of #Web3, this period was marked by decentralization, when almost everyone could have their own web server, and the Internet "acted as a relay between browsers and servers?.?

And then, in the early 2000s, #Web2.0 was born. Companies such as Meta or 谷歌 became mainstream, websites became more "participative" and in 2004 the first Web 2.0 conference was held. And current #Web3 proponents are convinced that this is when the Internet became centralized, with a large number of companies essentially "in charge" of virtually everything that happens on the web.
But while the world was moving into the Web2 era, pioneers like Satoshi Nakamoto were working on bitcoin, the first cryptocurrency. #Bitcoin was launched in 2009, and perhaps that's when the crypto era was born.?
So, how does this #Web3 work?
#Web3 is described as "a decentralized online ecosystem based on #blockchain" - Gavin Wood
Blockchain technology is the same technology behind bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Blockchain is "a ledger of data built in such a way that it cannot be changed or added to retroactively - so it is considered non-fungible?.?
If the latter term reminds you of anything, it's because non-fungible tokens (or "NFTs" as they are commonly called) were born out of the same blockchain technology. Proponents of Web3 argue that blockchain is special because the data stored on it cannot be erased.?
According to Gavin and other Web3 experts, blockchain technology will change the world because there is no central control point. You can't erase what you've done or fake what you haven't done. Web3 will be the beginning of a transparent, open, decentralised and peer-to-peer internet.?
Now that we've sorted out what Web3 is and what role blockchain technology plays in it, I'd like to break down how this decentralised data accounting system could change the way we #hire?

2 年Thanks Maksym what a fascinating first article you've written and awesome choice of clip to listen to - Gavin Wood is clearly a visionary way ahead of his time. When I think of how blockchains are going to work with Web3 I can't help feeling that your average user or someone like my mum will not actually realise any difference. By the time Web3 is in widespread use it will have crept in without most users even knowing it had. The UIs will take care of that. All that users will know is that the experience of Web3 will be very secure and very transparent. The main difference will be that the gathering pace of AI, deep fakes, bots etc will less allow users to pretend to be something they are not, or to adapt data for their own selfish uses because of the transparency, security of decentralised models and as you put it the lower level of retroactivity - in comparison to how web 2.0 works today.
