Weaving Sustainability into Every Stitch: Eskimo Fashion Knitwear's Commitment to the Planet

Embodying the ethos of "Powered by People and Passion," Eskimo Fashion Knitwear has integrated sustainable and ethical practices into their operations in every possible way. The story of Eskimo began in the 1870s when the Merkel family founded the company near Chemnitz in Saxony to produce high-quality knitted gloves and socks. What started as a small family business in Europe eventually moved to Asia, and in 1980, Eskimo established itself in Sri Lanka. Today, as a brand synonymous with manufacturing excellence, Eskimo continues to produce each garment with dedication to environmental consciousness.

Solar power and renewable energy

As an ISO 14000 certified company, Eskimo is taking meaningful steps toward sustainability by incorporating solar power into their operations. Their Negombo factory now generates 1.5 MW of solar energy, while the Punanai facility produces 250 KW, helping to power daily operations with cleaner, renewable energy. These initiatives have led to a 20% improvement in energy efficiency, showcasing their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint and operating more responsibly.

Pioneering environmental conservation

Since its inception, Eskimo has steadily prioritized environmental conservation, adopting green practices that align with their long-standing commitment to nature. The company's founders demonstrated this commitment early on by preserving a plot of land behind their Negombo factory, cultivating a thriving grove of Teak, Mahogany, and other native species. Over the years, this dedication has grown, with more than 1,000 trees planted last year across their three factories in Punani, Pallekele, and Negombo. Eskimo's dedication to giving back to the environment and maintaining a harmonious relationship with nature is evident in their meticulous monitoring of carbon dioxide emissions across all factories, as part of their efforts to improve their carbon footprint.?

Innovative wastewater management

A cornerstone of Eskimo's sustainability initiatives is their Wastewater Treatment Plant, which applies the principles of the 3R concept: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. This system reduces water usage through efficient processes, reuses treated water within their operations, and recycles waste materials to minimize environmental impact. By embracing this holistic approach, Eskimo ensures that every drop of water is utilized to its fullest potential while safeguarding natural resources.

Advancing their dedication to responsible waste management, Eskimo has partnered with Holcim for hazardous waste management, ensuring that waste materials posing significant risks to human health and the environment are collected, treated, and disposed of with the utmost care.

Achieving GOTS Certification

A significant milestone in Eskimo's sustainability journey is obtaining the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification for their Punanai and Pallekele plants. Previously, only the Negombo plant held this certification. However, through rigorous efforts and a steadfast commitment to aligning their practices with GOTS standards, Eskimo successfully extended this certification to their other facilities last year.

Future plans: what's next for Eskimo?

Eskimo's dedication to sustainability transcends corporate mandates, reflecting a heartfelt mission deeply embedded in their corporate vision.
