Weathering the Survivors’ Inner Storm: Addressing PTSD Post-Hurricane Helene

As Hurricane Helene tore through six states, it left more than just physical destruction in its wake. The storm claims over 220 lives and counting, making it the second deadliest hurricane in half a century, surpassed only by the devastating Hurricane Katrina. But as the big waves settle to a calm, an unseen crisis begins to unfold: the mental health impact on survivors. Dena Banks, a 41-year-old resident of Barnardsville, North Carolina, cried out “We’re losing everything,” as reported in USA Today.? Banks shares her assessment of her home and “mud-streaked” belongings.?

You see, it is beneath the physical damage, a mental health crisis brews. Survivors of the hurricane, like Dena, are left grappling with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts about the event begin to surface.

Here are five warning signs that someone may be experiencing PTSD after a traumatic event like a hurricane:

1. Intrusive Memories: Recurrent, unwanted distressing memories of the traumatic event.

2. Avoidance: Avoiding places, activities, or people that remind them of the traumatic event.

3. Negative Changes in Thinking and Mood: Negative thoughts about oneself or the world, feelings of hopelessness, memory problems, difficulty maintaining close relationships.

4. Changes in Physical and Emotional Reactions: Being easily startled or frightened, self-destructive behavior, trouble sleeping or concentrating, irritability, angry outbursts, or aggressive behavior.

5. Physical Symptoms: Headaches, dizziness, chest pains, stomach aches, and changes in appetite or sleep patterns.
