When was the last time you listened to or read the news and found positivity and optimism? What about your conversations at work or with your friends and family? We are all navigating through massively turbulent times, and the lion's share of the chaos is largely out of our control. Most days, it can feel like you’re on a never-ending rollercoaster ride in the dark - anxiously anticipating the next hairpin turn or stomach-twisting drop.?
Whether it’s economic instability, industry disruptions, or the global pandemonium that seems to redefine "normal" every other day, maintaining a positive mindset as a leader can feel like trying to find calm in a storm; fear not—in this blog post, we’re diving into strategies that will help you stay afloat and thrive amidst the chaos. Let’s embark on this journey together.
The Power of Positive Mindset
First things first—let’s talk about why this matters. You might think positivity is all rainbows and unicorns, but it’s backed by solid research.?
According to research published in the National Library of Medicine, individuals with high subjective well-being (aka happiness) live longer. They have stronger relationships, optimism, confidence, better health, less stress, and a more robust immune system.?
The World Economic Forum has conducted numerous research studies showing that companies that have leaders and team members with a positive mindset and strong EX (employee experience) thrive. On average, they experience a 4X increase in revenue and a 21% increase in profits. Productivity, decision-making, customer satisfaction, EPS, quality, retention, and innovation also improve.?
So, when we figure out how to maintain a positive mindset, we live longer, and companies are more successful. Everyone wins. Next, the magic question is, ‘How do we make the shift?’. If it were easy, everyone would do it - right??
Embrace the Chaos (Yes, Really)
Picture this: your industry is in flux, competitors are lurking around every corner, and the media seems to revel in gloomy headlines. It’s easy to get sucked into the vortex of negativity. But what if, instead of seeing chaos as a threat, you view it as an opportunity for growth and innovation?
Remember Blockbuster? Once an industry giant, it failed to adapt to the changing landscape of streaming services. On the other hand, Amazon spent nine years and had 3 billion dollars in cumulative losses until it became profitable. They had the vision, saw opportunity, and continued to adjust and adapt to leverage the chaos in shifting market dynamics to their advantage. I am pretty sure you won’t have to spend that much time or money. However, embrace change because therein lies the chance to innovate and outmaneuver the competition. Don’t be like Blockbuster, be like Amazon.?
Here are a few great questions to ask yourself:?
- What are the most significant headwinds for your business right now, and why is this happening?
- Which forces are within or outside your control, and how do they impact the outcomes you want for yourself and your business (positively or negatively)?
- Where can you create a unified strategy that leads to a successful outcome regardless of the direction external forces take?

Cultivating Resilience
Resilience is the secret sauce that keeps successful executives going when the going gets tough. It’s not about denying the challenges but bouncing back stronger after setbacks. One way to build resilience is through mindfulness practices like meditation or yoga. These not only calm the mind but also train it to stay focused amidst chaos.
Another tactic is reframing challenges as opportunities. When faced with a setback, ask yourself: What can I learn? How can we use this experience to improve our strategies? By shifting your perspective, you empower yourself and your team to find silver linings even in the darkest clouds.
Embracing an experimental mindset goes a long way to maintaining positivity. When you have a fixed mindset, you put yourself into a win/lose situation, which, my friend, is entirely unnecessary.? Why back yourself into a corner when you don’t need to??
Nothing is 100% successful, and nothing is a complete failure. We’ve adapted to an agile methodology for software development, and now terms like sprint, scrum, and MVP are part of our everyday vocabulary.?
Leverage that methodology for you and your team as you navigate through good times and bad, and you will find your resilience, positivity, and political clout skyrocket. Take these steps to get started:?
- Be transparent about experimenting. Let people know that you don’t expect everything to go perfectly.?
- Set measurable short-term goals to tell what’s working and what isn’t.?
- Make it a regular practice to assess progress regularly, keep what works, and take a new approach to what hasn't.?
Surround Yourself with Positivity
As a leader, your mindset is contagious. If you radiate negativity, your team will pick up on it like a bad cold. On the flip side, cultivating positivity creates a ripple effect that boosts morale and productivity. Fostering a positive workplace culture where optimism and enthusiasm are not just buzzwords but pillars of success can be precisely what the doctor ordered when stress and uncertainty rage at all-time highs.

One way to foster positivity is through open communication. Share wins, big or small, and celebrate achievements together. Create opportunities for team bonding, whether virtual happy hours or outdoor retreats. These moments of camaraderie build trust and strengthen team spirit, essential ingredients for weathering any storm.
Surround yourself with positive people. You are a reflection of the people you spend the most time with, so make that time count.? Pay attention to how you feel after each interaction. If you’re energized and ready to climb that mountain - you’ve found your tribe. If you’re frustrated and exhausted, it’s time to distance yourself.?
Create a culture bubble if you need to. You can’t control everything; sometimes, you must protect yourself and your team from toxicity. The best ways to do this while maintaining a connection to the organization and its goals are to:?
- Have fun. No one said work has to be drudgery. Laugh, keep things light, and restore humanity into everyone's day.?
- Focus on aligning your work to the company's biggest goals. Nothing revs the engine like knowing your hard work matters to those around you.?
- Practice gratitude. When the team is super stressed and deadlines seem never-ending, start your next meeting by asking everyone to say one thing they’re grateful for. The momentary shift in perspective can make all the difference. For more inspiration, check out how having an attitude of gratitude can be your biggest superpower.
Learn to Delegate (The good stuff)
You might be tempted to micromanage every detail, especially when uncertainty looms large. But trust me on this—learning to delegate is not just about lightening your workload; it’s about empowering your team. When you trust your team members to handle tasks autonomously, you free up your mental bandwidth and demonstrate confidence in their abilities.
Empowered employees are more engaged and motivated, directly impacting productivity and innovation. Leaders who empower their employees experience higher profitability and customer satisfaction. So loosen the reins a bit and watch your team soar.
As the former president of Control-Freaks Anonymous, I want to share a few pro tips on delegating effectively so you can set your team up for success.?
- Make sure your team has the capacity; if they don’t, clear out the low-impact work so they do.?
- Ask your team to share their approach with you. What steps will they take, who do they need to work with, how long will it take, and when will they know they’re heading for trouble? When you understand the process, you can course-correct before they even start.?
- Schedule your check-ins so you aren’t left wondering, and set clear expectations on what they should do if they have questions or problems.?
Create an environment where everyone plays to their strengths. We don’t get to do the work that fires us up often enough. If you take the time to understand what everyone loves doing and redistribute the work accordingly, you’ll get twice as much work done with better results. Your team will become energized and move from uncertainty to charging forward in any circumstance.?
Find Your Anchor
It’s crucial to have something—or someone—that grounds you amid uncertainty. This could be a mentor or coach whose wisdom steadies your resolve, a hobby that puts you in your happy place, or simply a morning routine that sets a positive tone for the day ahead.
Many leaders use meditation to clear their minds and enhance creativity. While you don’t need to channel your inner monk, finding practices that center you amidst chaos can make all the difference. As the saying goes, "You cannot control the wind, but you can adjust your sails."
Sometimes, being the anchor for someone else can help you find your center. For all you people pleasers out there, if you are energized by helping others, open yourself up to being that anchor for someone else. Choose carefully; you don’t want to become a haven for negativity.
Maintain a pragmatic perspective. How many times have you been stressed out beyond belief over an issue that turned out to be unimportant? If you find yourself acting with extreme urgency and are not in the business of saving lives, you need to step away and look at the bigger picture.?
- How important will this be next week, next month, next year??
- Are you unnecessarily allowing low-priority external factors to crush your positivity??
- Is what you’re doing aligned with your and the company's priorities??
Are you leading with a sense of urgency or panic? Your team is watching and will follow your lead, so you can (and should) set the tone. Remember, you cannot be your best for others if you're not at your best. Find your anchor and keep your perspective in check.
?Conclusion: Charting a Course Forward
As we wrap up our journey through the turbulent seas of uncertainty, remember this: maintaining a positive mindset isn’t about denying reality; it’s about harnessing the power within you to navigate challenges with grace and resilience. By embracing change, fostering positivity, and empowering your team, you weather the storm and emerge stronger on the other side.
So, take a deep breath. You’ve got this. And remember, in the words of Winston Churchill, "The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty."
Now go forth and conquer!
