Weapons of societal degradation
Radhika Gopinatha dasa
Professor of Vedic Theology and Religious Studies: Present society needs a new paradigm of devotion to God.
HH Harivilas Maharaja of ISKCON Seattle has identified 7 weapons of societal degradation and created a big poster near the entrace of temple on second floor of the building. The picture here is a photograph of that poster.
The concept of "weapons of societal degradation" in the context of social media, divorce, "woke" politics, and materialistic views encompasses several interrelated factors that can contribute to societal decline. Here’s a breakdown of these elements:
Social Media
Divorce and Family Structure
Woke Politics
Materialistic Views
Social Media and Anxiety
Existential Anxiety Related to Technology
Socio-Political Dynamics
External pressures
Cognitive decline
Overextension and complexity
Problem:
These factors collectively act as "weapons" that can degrade societal structures and values. They create a cycle of disconnection, conflict, and instability, ultimately threatening the fabric of society. Addressing these issues requires a multifaceted approach that promotes dialogue, community engagement, and a shift towards more sustainable and inclusive values.
Why traditional solutions failed:
Traditional solutions act like 'band aids' covering up the symptom but do not address the core issue. The core issue is that the material world is designed to be a place of misery. Krishna says in the Bhagavad gita
"mām upetya punar janma du?khālayam a?ā?vatam
nāpnuvanti mahātmāna? sa?siddhi? paramā? gatā?
After attaining Me, the great souls, who are yogīs in devotion, never return to this temporary world, which is full of miseries, because they have attained the highest perfection.
Since this temporary material world is full of the miseries of birth, old age, disease and death, naturally he who achieves the highest perfection and attains the supreme planet, K???aloka, Goloka V?ndāvana, does not wish to return. The supreme planet is described in Vedic literature as avyakta and ak?ara and paramā gati; in other words, that planet is beyond our material vision, and it is inexplicable, but it is the highest goal, the destination for the mahātmās (great souls). The mahātmās receive transcendental messages from the realized devotees and thus gradually develop devotional service in K???a consciousness and become so absorbed in transcendental service that they no longer desire elevation to any of the material planets, nor do they even want to be transferred to any spiritual planet. They only want K???a and K???a’s association, and nothing else. That is the highest perfection of life. This verse specifically mentions the personalist devotees of the Supreme Lord, K???a. These devotees in K???a consciousness achieve the highest perfection of life. In other words, they are the supreme souls".
By design the material world is not a pleasurable place. People replaced Congress with BJP in India and are faced with rising taxes. People replaced Republicans with Democrats in USA only to see gradual decline of moral values. Instead of trying to fix the material world, one solution is to leave this to a higher abode. That abode can be approached only through mantras.
The spiritual abode is very intricate:
As Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur says in his translation of the Brahma Samhita, "There is a mysterious quadrangular place named ?vetadvīpa surrounding the outskirts of Gokula. ?vetadvīpa is divided into four parts on all sides. The abode of Vāsudeva, Sa?kar?a?a, Pradyumna and Aniruddha are separately located in each of these four parts. These four divided abodes are enveloped by the fourfold human requirements such as piety, wealth, passion and liberation, as also by the four Vedas, viz., ?g, Sāma, Yajur and Atharva, which deal with the mantra and which are the bases of achievements of the fourfold mundane requirements. Ten tridents are fixed in the ten directions, including the zenith and nadir. The eight directions are decorated with the eight jewels of Mahāpadma, Padma, ?a?kha, Makara, Kacchapa, Mukunda, Kunda, and Nīla. There are ten protectors [dik-pālas] of the ten directions in the form of mantra." "As for example klī? k???āya govindāya gopījana-vallabhāya svāhā—this is a hexagonal mantra consisting of six transcendental words, viz., (1) k???āya, (2) govindāya, (3) gopījana, (4) vallabhāya, (5) svā, (6) hā. These six transcendental words, when placed juxtapositionally, indicate the mantra."
While we may not fully understand this with us simplistic minds, we need to understand that there is a higher knolwedge base that can be aquired by mercy or Kripa Shakti of Bhagavan Krishna.

4 个月Hare Krishna Prabhu ??. The piece from Brahma Samhita intensifies the longing for Krishna in his original abode. Thank you. Hari Bol.
The truth is simply one - that life is in a direct relationship with Earth. Power is gained over Life and Earth by making this relationship indirect. Any ideology that aims to do this is a violent expansionist ideology, whether it is a religious, political, economic, financial, legal, or an academic ideology. An ideology shapes the worldview of its followers with the intent to shape Truth into a Reality. An ideology shapes our beliefs and through shaping our beliefs, offers a justification for our way of life, our reasons for living, what we spend our time and our energy chasing. If Life doesn't know any other way to interact with Earth except indirectly through money, such Life must also believe in Power, an external entity that controls the money needed to live on Earth.
