ARE WE THERE YET?: Travelling More Responsibly With Your Children

Rachel Dodds and co-author Richard Butler’s book? Are We There Yet? - Travelling More Responsibly With Your Children, ?could not have arrived at a more auspicious time.??The world of travel as we knew it has now changed forever more, being replaced by a real desire to travel more consciously. The prospect of doing so with children,??can complicate things and ratchet up the challenge of making the most of what can be an extraordinarily educational and bonding opportunity, whilst endeavouring to make the best decisions for family, place and planet.??

Travelling with our young folk is an opportunity for personal discovery, both for parents and children, a time to navigate unchartered territories together, to put in the ground work for developing responsible, empathetic global citizens, some rare time-out to discuss life’s tricky questions and to reappraise the choices we make as visitors. Some astute guidance is very welcomed.?

It is little wonder??that the arrival of “Are We There Yet?” is proving especially valuable. It delivers a??very comprehensive guide and sage advice on how to travel responsibly, illustrated by??inspirational first-hand stories, exhaustive age-related recommendations and resource links, and gives a near blueprint for making the most of the formative opportunity with children.?

There are many standout out features, but I particularly enjoyed the firsthand tales from parents as they shared the lessons all of their family had learned, making the content particularly relatable. In a sense,?this is a book about what travel should really be for all of us, but it especially highlights the extraordinary opportunity travel is for our young folk and parents in teaching values, empathy and responsibility.

I also enjoyed the advice to ‘expose children early to things that interest you’, using technology, such as web cams etc.,??to inspire and create some knowledge about the experiences and places before departure. This is not just pertinent to travel,??but to the creation of curious, life-long learners. With the growth in intergenerational travel, the timing of Are We There Yet? - Travelling More Responsibly With Your Children, is spot on!?

Congratulations to Dr. Rachel Dodds and Dr. Richard Butler for showing us how to create one of the most valuable life-experiences there is when shared as a family and how to do so more responsibly, for the benefit of?the family, community, place and planet.?
