Reflecting on his start in sales, Luis said, “I stumbled into sales at a young age because I was a bit lost in the sauce, couldn’t figure out the flavor… I developed this capacity for connecting with people, helping them to visualize a much better outcome for themselves and for their teams.” His story is a testament to the power of resilience and adaptability in leadership.
The Importance of Self-Awareness and Vulnerability
Developing self-awareness is crucial for leaders, according to Luis. He shared how journaling has helped him visualize and work through unconscious thoughts and beliefs, allowing him to connect authentically with his teams. “Developing self-awareness or awareness that you’ve achieved self-awareness is something that you do over time and you cannot do alone,” he explained. Luis believes that this authenticity attracts like-minded individuals and builds a foundation of trust and respect. “The more self-aware you are, the more authentically you show up, the more vulnerable you are with your teams,” he added, highlighting the importance of vulnerability in leadership.
Creating a Positive Company Culture
Luis Báez described his early sales career in NYC, marked by unsupportive leadership, and how a move to Silicon Valley introduced him to a culture of inclusivity and servant leadership. “Imagine me, high anxiety, going into my first sales meeting and pipeline review,” he recounted. “I was ready to be drilled, but my sales director walked in and humanized the entire process.” This experience taught Luis the value of a supportive work environment and the impact of leadership that prioritizes human connection.
Personalized Sales Approaches in the Age of AI
In an era dominated by AI-powered outreach, Luis emphasized the need for personalized, human touches in sales. “I lean into the analog way of doing things,” he said. “Handwritten notes and things like that are gonna go a lot further this day and age.” Luis advocates for sending fewer, well-thought-out messages over mass outreach. “You have to draw a connection as to the why,” he advised, stressing that personalized outreach helps build genuine connections and stands out amid automated communications.
Avoiding Burnout Through Effective Delegation
Luis also shared his personal experiences with burnout and the lessons he learned about delegation. “You as a leader… you’ve got to find ways of duplicating yourself,” he stated. Transparent communication and effective delegation not only alleviate pressure but also empower teams and enhance overall productivity. Luis highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for team members to take on responsibilities, thereby fostering a culture of trust and mutual support.
