Are we willing to let AI take over sales?
Here's a random thought...if we're automating the building of sales presentations and email templates and call scripts, what are we doing about fostering rep curiosity and the creation of business value hypotheses?
I know AI is the new shiny thing and curiosity must be old fashioned since John Patterson coached reps to be curious at National Cash Register way back in 1887.
Here's a modest proposal. Why don't we just replace sales people with chat bots. They will work 24x7x365. They won't take smoke or mental health breaks. They won't whine about working remotely (except that they are in the cloud. They will work ceaselessly and continue to call customers until the algorithms are optimized, then call some more.
I'm sure customers will be fine with that. Not.
Have we heard of any enterprise customer asking to interact with a bot rather than a sentient being? Nope.
Here's the good news. We've seen this play out before. Those that add value will continue to add more value. Those that don't, well...
And some customers will willingly pay a lot more for real service from sentient human beings. And others, well...just give them the fax number to send in their AI-assisted order
