We are what we eat

We are what we eat

We are what we eat. How true.

January and our state of unrest of the food we eat is at its highest. Every newspaper, magazine and website is shouting at us.

"Lose XXkgs in 7 days".

"A 6-pack in 6 days"

"Thinner thighs in minutes" (OK, I made that one up but you get the message).

As we mature our tastes are supposed to develop with us and we turn to bitter, sophisticated foods rather than the sugary, salty, fatty fast foods we have grown up on.

But how do we avoid the 80% of processed foods that have added sugar? Regular exposure to such sweet-salt-fat processed foods imprints itself upon us and makes it difficult to break out.

Difficult but not impossible. There is evidence to show that no child is genetically pre-determined to dislike certain food types. Between 4 and 7 months babies are receptive to flavour and this present a great opportunity (often missed) for parents to try feeding stronger tasting vegetables to their baby.

Before it was banned in the 1980's, vanilla was added to baby milk! This means millions have developed a taste for the creamy, sweetness and believe that this is what milk should taste like.

My first experience with milk was at school where we were given a daily bottle. During the Summer the bottles would sit in the sun until they had curdled and it the Winter we would have to melt them on the radiators before they could be sucked through a straw.

You will not get milk through my lips today.

There is deep mistrust for dietary change but it is a learnt behaviour and can be changed. If we can get beyond the feel-good element of fast food we can eat healthily and nutritiously.

At VitalinQ we have the tools to help individuals take control of their diets. For more information please contact me

Interesting. I'll take a look David. Sugar consumption is increasingly being associated with 'Western' ailments, the latest I've read is the link with arthritis, (not simply the link with obesity and arthritis) as I have osteoarthritis and am trying to halt or reverse its progress, I'm taking this seriously and have just bought Davina McCall's book 'Sugar Free' from Lakeland (1/2 price at £8 in their Jan sale). I hope it'll wean me and my family away from empty calories. It seems ideal way forward for me as It takes into account that many of us enjoy cooking and cook for our families and don't want the cost, incongruity or inconvenience of individual meals for each member.
