We Walked To School - Why Are They Still Walking?

The number of school children who face transport challenges in South Africa is alarming. This also compromises their chances of receiving quality education. Access to safe and reliable transport is a must if we want our children to do better than us.

Let's help these children to have safe and reliable school transport

Almost half a century ago, I and millions of other South Africans walked to school. Back then, the economic inequalities were dire, and it was at the peak of an unjust political system. And decades on, it seems the situation is not where one would expect it to be, considering some of the gains in the past 30 years.

According to statistics shared by The Love Trust, a non-profit organisation that's committed to quality education for vulnerable children - over 8 million out of 12.5 million children in South Africa still walk to school daily because their families cannot afford private transport.

It's for this reason that I will be taking part in the Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg Race on the 17th of next month for a good cause. I will be tackling the 97 kilometres hilly route to raise funds for vulnerable children at Nokuphila School in Thembisa, Ekurhuleni. I'm planning to raise at least R10 000 between today and race day.

Virgin Active 947 Ride Joburg is the world's second largest timed cycling race after the Cape Town Cycle Tour. It attracts more than 5000 cyclists. On race day the City of Johannesburg comes to a standstill as cyclists take over major routes.

And with just a few weeks to go before the race, cyclists continue to do their hill climb training. This weekend scores of cyclists descended on the cycling hub at the Cradle of Humankind in Muldersdrift, west of Johannesburg for their training rides. The race gets tougher as we pedal out of the Kyalami Grandprix Circuit, past Sunninghill, through Randburg and back to the calabash at FNB stadium.
