In today's #MondayMusing I wonder if we are using the term Artificial Intelligence accurately. Does anyone really have an Artificial Intelligent product or platform yet?

What do you think? What is the difference between Artificial Intelligence, Machin Learning, Guided Conversations, and Chatbots? They do have lots in common, but are they all simply Artificial Intelligence or Machine Intelligence? Leave your comments below.

7 年Great musing, Steve. I have been thinking a lot about this as well. I did a short video on it just yesterday as a matter of fact, throwing out there the idea that machines are only as smart as the information we provide it. That additionally computers are not able to artificially intelligently process there way to a solution, they merely sort through all of the data and research humans provide them. Anyhow, very interesting conversation and if you are interested in my short take the link is https://youtu.be/vfxm9NQ4xfA Have a great Wednesday!

7 年No of course not. Machines currently only have the ability to 'learn' to recognize patterns in a fairly narrow setting. Whilst they can do this as well and better than humans in some domains, they cannot yet generalise or understand what it is they have learnt. Perhaps the term 'Artificial Emergent Intelligence' is more apt. If our brains evolved soley from the advantage confered by being able to make sense of the stimulous being provided from a simple light sensitive proto-eye then that is probably roughly where they are at. I guess the big question is whether, without natural competition or a survival imperative, their still very limited, ability to self generate code will act as the equivalent of random genetic modification / mutation only at a possibly faster pace than our own.

7 年The traditional problems (or goals) of AI research include reasoning, knowledge, planning, learning, natural language processing, perception and the ability to move and manipulate objects.General intelligence is among the field's long-term goals.Approaches include statistical methods, computational intelligence, and traditional symbolic AI. Many tools are used in AI, including versions of search and mathematical optimization, neural networks and methods based on statistics, probability and economics. The AI field draws upon computer science, mathematics, psychology, linguistics, philosophy, neuroscience, artificial psychology and many others. The field was founded on the claim that human intelligence "can be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it".This raises philosophical arguments about the nature of the mind and the ethics of creating artificial beings endowed with human-like intelligence, issues which have been explored by myth, fiction and philosophy since antiquity. Some people also consider AI a danger to humanity if it progresses unabatedly.Others believe that AI, unlike previous technological revolutions, will create a risk of mass unemployment. In the twenty-first century, AI techniques have experienced a resurgence following concurrent advances in computer power, large amounts of data, and theoretical understanding; and AI techniques have become an essential part of the technology industry, helping to solve many challenging problems in computer science.

7 年Hi Steve! In my opinion the term Artificial Intelligence is a very broad term that could include a number of technologies including machine learning. Is it misused? Oh yes, particularly in marketing materials but no more so in insurance than any other industry. The key is, if you want to know more about what is being referred to as AI, you have to dig deeper - ask questions.
