Relationships matter. Our friendships matter. The ones we love matter and who love us, matter.
We know this. And yet.
We go through times of isolation and loneliness. We question our place in the world. And if anyone cares. At times, we can feel so alone. Does anyone understand? Does anyone want to understand?
We seek connection.
Even the most introverted among us. Wish to connect. To have a deep and meaningful connection with a few true friends.
We want someone to say, I see you. I get you. I believe in you. I stand with you.
We know this. And yet.
Only your real friends will tell you when your face is dirty. - Sicilian Proverb
We humans are a lot of things. A diverse and wonderful mess to be sure.
Each of us has a tremendous capacity for learning, growth, betterment, making mental connections and figuring things out. But in the singular, we are a frail creature. We need only step out into the wild and see how easily we are damaged.
There is only so much the one can do on their own.
It is our capacity to pass along information learned from others and work together that propels us forward. Our capacity to help one another is our great power.
We know this. And yet.
Friends are like walls. Sometimes you lean on them, and sometimes it's good just knowing they are there.

In a world, that can seem colder and more distant. More fractured with ideology, dogma, and rhetoric it in our togetherness where we are at our best.
There is no one on this planet, or has ever been on this planet, that has succeeded at anything completely on their own. The self-made "man" just isn't true.
Each of us, do own our accomplishments. We should indeed be proud but not prideful of what we do and how we contribute.
Remember, always remember all the people in your life that have contributed. All the people who came before you that gifted you with the knowledge you have. All the people who contributed to making the things you have in life that may help you in your journey. All those who have stood with you at different parts of your life.
No one is completely self-made. Someone raised you. Someone taught you. You have taught others. You have impacted others’ lives.
We know this. And yet.
At times we forget.
There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship.
-Thomas Aquinas
And this is why it is good to take a moment today to:
- Thank your partner - We fall into routines and sometimes those routines make it seem that we are taking for granted this special person who has chosen to stand with you like no other. Couples who do this report increased levels of intimacy and trust due to a better feeling that their needs are being met.
- Thank your friends - Pick up the phone and call your best friend. Let them know what they mean to you. Be specific on how they have stood with you, stood by you, listened to you, cared for you. Don't take it for granted that they know. It will be the best thing that happens to them today.
- Thank three of your connections - in our modern world we are connected through technology to a lot of different people. We want to be connected and still we don't often reach out. Take a moment today and send three of your connections a message of gratitude. Send out some good vibes to those who have chosen to be connected to you.
You may be surprised at the reaction. You'll find at least one person that really needed it today.
Everyone has time for a sincere and genuine message of thanks.

And while you’re at it. Make sure and
Thank yourself - Being nice to yourself is important. We are many times our own worst enemy. Express gratitude that you are doing a better job than you were doing yesterday, that you are building new habits, that you are going after your dreams even in tough times.
We know this. And yet.
We forget.
But not today.

4 年Great article and reminder, James Marcus Ross. In western society there is this fascination with the "self-made", and that is pretty much the furthest from the truth in almost every case. There's no Jobs without Wozniak, there's no Gates without Allen. Heck, there's even no Tiger Woods without parents who pushed, supported, and encouraged. No one is an island, and no one escapes a deserted island without help (Tom Hanks in "Castaway" not withstanding).
