Why Air New Zealand is now weighing its passengers

This summer, one airline will be weighing more than luggage. Air New Zealand recently announced that it will ask its passengers to step on the scales at their departure gates as part of?a five-week customer weight survey. Under the initiative, some 10,000 passengers travelling internationally out of Auckland International Airport between now and 2 July 2023 will be weighed prior to boarding. Read more here.

What is turbulence? An investigation into why the skies seem to be bumpier than ever before

Turbulence is all over the news right now. TikTok's chokehold on the world, and the launch of Instagram reels, means video footage of flight disasters is at our fingertips like never before. But what is turbulence? How safe are we in the skies? And is turbulence occurring more frequently, or is evidence of it just easier to access than ever before?

To get to the bottom of it all, we turned to Isabel Smith of the University of Reading 's Meteorology Department, whose work involves using high-resolution climate models to predict increases in atmospheric turbulence and who explains everything you need to know below. Read the full story here.

France has banned short-haul flights to cut carbon emissions

Over the years, airlines have taken steps to counteract their environmental impact. The global aviation industry has agreed to try to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, and multiple airlines are looking at using sustainable fuels, carbon offsetting and other low-emission technologies such as electric or hydrogen-powered aircrafts. Most recently, France’s government has announced that it is banning domestic short-haul flights on routes where train alternatives that are under two-and-a-half hours exist.?Read the full story here.
