We still need fossil fuels!

Up to 8,000 households in Scotland are currently without heat and / or the ability to cook food due to the failure of a key component of the gas distribution network.

According to this report, it could be the coming weekend before full supply is restored to all.

Meantime, I can only imagine the disruption to the families and businesses in the area.

To make matters worse, there have been power outs due to the additional load on the electricity network.

It is popular now for politicians and others to propose that we can do away with fossil fuels overnight. Perhaps those who advocate this policy would like to take up residence this week in the affected area?

We will need a lot of time to achieve the energy transition. Scotland is fortunately rich in renewable energy resources but its clear that even the power distribution infrastructure for electricity is not up to the job of a full switch away from gas - and that's before we all have electric cars!

Meantime, hope the milder weather continues and reduces a little the misery of cold homes, no hot water or hot food for the communities affected.
