"We spend so much time helping others, our own mental health can be overlooked, especially when markets are down and clients are beating you up."

Question from a subscriber: "One topic you might consider is how important it is for advisors to maintain good mental health. We spend so much time helping others, our own mental health can be overlooked. This is especially true when markets are down and clients are beating us up."

First of all, if your mental health is a serious issue then seek professional, clinical help. It's nobody else's business and there is nothing wrong with it.

I am not a psychologist but here are some non-clinical methods for maintaining a healthy mental attitude towards your work.

?

Take these actions TODAY:

  • Get a "nice" folder in your email inbox. When someone sends you a kind message, save it there. Look back at it whenever you need a boost.
  • Surround yourself with positive people who have an upbeat attitude, and who actively seek to maintain a positive mental attitude.
  • Write down your mission in two sentences, and look at it every morning before work and every afternoon when you pack up for the day.
  • Remember that everyone is entitled to their opinion and often people say things without thinking it through. People are biased and emotional, and their views can change quickly.
  • Try as hard as you can to see difficult client moments as your greatest opportunity for personal and professional growth. Every criticism is an opportunity to strengthen your skills, practice, and self awareness if you take it that way.
  • If you are constantly feeling upset about incidents that keep happening, try writing about it. Make a table and write the "antecedent", or trigger. Write about the incident and what happened. Then write about how it was resolved and whether or not you think that was a good thing.

?

Again, I am not a therapist so please don't take this as professional counseling. Antonio and I have four kids and two of them have ADHD (one also has autism), so I've learned alot about managing feelings.

I can say that with constructive practices, mental health can be improved. There is hope. Keep trying different things until you find what works. I've seen my kids improve gradually, thanks be to God, and I'll pray for anyone else who goes through something hard like this.

Frankly if you are constantly communicating with clients they tend to not be calling you beating you up. If on the other hand you are hiding under your desk, I can understand why you are getting beat up. Client communication is the key to being successful in this business. If you are the type who just sends out a birthday card once every 10 years, you might want to consider a different profession or better yet, stay, you make it easier for those who do what my office does to take over your business.
