We are the Soup

We are all storytellers. All of us. We are all stories. Our stories lie below the surface of our skin. So we have to ask. We have to listen. We have to hold space for listening. That means opening our hearts and minds. When you look a person in the eye and let them speak without judgement you are allowing for a type of communion. Because we are all part of the same collective spirit. We are not just swimming in the same soup, we are the soup. 

Ask questions. Be curious. Try and understand. That’s part of compassion and compassion can only happen when you put yourself into the story you are hearing, or seeing. You cannot tell the whole story with one image, but you can tell a good chunk of it. You can’t tell the story with a few questions but you can reveal vital components. What you believe and what you’ve overcome says a great deal about who you are. Just thinking about those questions helps you to understand yourself.

If we saw each other as an ingredient in a recipe, if we saw each other as essential parts of a whole, we would not harm each other. We would live in a world of love. That’s what love is. Love begins with story. When we share them with each other we are recognizing that.
