We should all be First aiders

We should all be First aiders

What if I told you that you could save a life? That though a lady lays completely still in the middle of the road, with her eyes closed, she could be telling her near-death experience story to millions the next day because of YOU.

There is an underemphasized significance attached to the importance of first aid knowledge globally (but especially in Africa), and though this does not encapsulate all that MAYA is about it represents 70% of its aim. Why? you may ask, let's talk...

Vision of MAYA

To live in a world where everyone can use their hands to save others and themselves.

The why of MAYA

“A lady was reported to have slumped/fainted during her birthday party”.

"A man allegedly fainted during a questioning session, and another man rushed to him, shoved his fingers into the subconscious man’s mouth in a bid to prevent his teeth from clenching together too hard".

Unaware he could lose those fingers by doing that

“A Pastor was stabbed in his office and while he lay on the ground, he pulled out the knife and bled to death”.

The news is tirelessly lined with these kinds of stories. But, just because a person fainted, with the possibility of little to no heartbeats, does not mean that individual is dead. A lot of people have been declared dead while still alive because the 10+ people present could not check for a pulse, and those that could, refused to do something because they do not want to ‘be in charge of a person's life’.

Deciding to wait until our country (Nigeria) has an adequate and effective emergency response system across every state and city, will be an optimistic reality but also the wrong way of thinking. Instead, I propose that we build a country where every individual can SERVE as an emergency responder. The dire need for people to understand how to check for a pulse, place pressure on injuries, carry out CPR, use a first aid kit properly, or even help a choking person can in many ways save lives.

Aims and Objectives of MAYA

MAYA aims to instill values and skills that encompass:

  • teaching Africans and the entire world life support and first aid knowledge,
  • promoting the presence of a first aid box within every building and home,
  • fields and initiatives that promote public health, such as drug abuse awareness, self-defense, mental health awareness, psychological first aid, self-checkups, proofing homes, emergency response, epidemiology, the list goes on…

The name MAYA

My Arms Your Aid is a phrase that captures the duty of every human in existence. Although it was coined from an imaginative, and perfectionistic mind (mine), it holds a deeper meaning, which is rooted in Empathy, Duty, and Responsibility.
