Will we see the biggest race for talent in 2020?

2020 has proved to be one of the most difficult years in recent memory. What started off as a health crisis has developed into a global economic catastrophe, resulting in mass redundancies, underemployment and unemployment.

But what happens when things start to return to 'normal'? Businesses will start hiring again! However, when candidates are going to be fighting each other for the best jobs, those same organisations will be fighting each other for the best candidates. Sure, applicants might take their first offer just to secure a job, pay some bills and gain employment. But what happens when a better offer comes up? Remember this isn't an industry or sector race for talent. This will be a global competition for quality.

This is where an Employee Value Proposition (EVP) really matters and now is your time to improve it. An EVP is more than a catchy slogan or pretty pictures. It's everything an employee considers when they ask themselves..."what's in it for me"? It's the salary, rewards, growth opportunity, culture, values, purpose & more. What are you offering, that your competitors aren't? Yes, an employer brand will help you tell this story, but will it be fact or fiction? Because if an employee accepts the job based on the employer brand and it's not genuine, you'll be recruiting again in a matter of weeks at the expense of time, money and reputation.

If you're planning on putting up a couple of ads in a few months time and expecting to hire the best talent, think again because the competition will be hotter than ever. While there's never been a worse time for business, there's never been a better time to plan.

The 'war for talent' was a term coined by McKinsey way back when... The 'term' is unchanged but the agenda has - the working populations mind-set has shifted and so have aspirations. The EVP has and should evolve, a defining factor that differentiates you from the rest. Great article Tim at such an important time.
