We’ve all done it. Made a bonehead mistake. It’s an inevitable part of work life. In fact, it often means you’re learning because you are taking calculated risks. But how you handle mistakes is key to your growth. So what do you do when you’ve made a costly error? Try following these three steps to set yourself up for success.

  1. ?? Analyze - Most errors in the workplace are not life-and-death mistakes. First, ensure you have a proper perspective of the issue, then analyze the problem either on your own or with the help of a team member.
  2. ??? Apologize - Don’t make excuses or justify your behavior. Rather, acknowledge what you’ve done to the appropriate person and move on. Write down your apology so you are phrasing it correctly. Then go to the person and express your regret.
  3. ?? Adjust - Be solution-oriented and get a game plan for the future. This may require you to make changes in your work style. If you are someone who needs accountability, you may want to share this with your boss or another co-worker.

One last thought. The biggest mistake you can make is to do nothing. Don’t let your fear of failure keep you from taking action. Making mistakes is not failure; it’s growth!

Until next time,
