Our journey to Mapapa with Dora Moono Nyambe.
We want to take you on a behind-the-scenes look into some of our projects. Often, what our audience sees in our films on YouTube is just a small fraction of what goes into our efforts to make the world a better place. The team at Beast Philanthropy can work for over a year on some of the projects to guarantee that we provide those in need with the best possible care. We want to share with you all of the unforeseen challenges, the hidden triumphs, and the untold stories that shape Beast Philanthropy and our mission to change the world.
In our latest adventure, we called on our long-time partners, Lectric eBikes , to help us return to the village of Mapapa, where we had some unfinished business with Dora and her incredible children. If you missed our first film in Zambia, watch 'We Powered A Village' here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FQvRZg3bcg&ab_channel=BeastPhilanthropy
After we were originally introduced to Dora, we were immediately blown away by her dedication to helping the community in Mapapa and all of the challenges she faced. We knew we had to step in and seek ways in which we could help.?
Dora and her village were in dire need of electricity. They had been trying to raise funds to bring government-provided electricity to their village, but progress was slow. So, we decided to partner with GivePower and devised a phased plan to provide solar power. This was how we powered a village in Zambia. Additionally, access to electricity allowed the use of better cooking equipment and freezers, which enhanced food preservation.
The Impact of ‘We Powered A Village’.
The impact was evident when we returned to Mapapa to film the second film. The installation of solar power and access to clean and sustainable energy sources had transformed children’s daily lives and, through the fundraising and support gained from ‘We Powered A Village’ (which reached 36 million views and counting), had a profound effect. Much of this can be said thanks to Dora, who, when given the means, continues to pour her heart and soul into the betterment of so many lives.
During the visit, Darren was struck by Dora's exceptional spirit.
"Dora is one of the most incredible people I've ever met. I mean, she just doesn't stop. I was joking that the next time we go back to Zambia, we're going to land at the Mapapa International Airport.? I wouldn't put it past her. She's incredibly committed. She's doing the very best and the kids are so happy." - Darren Margolias.
It’s not only Darren who recognizes Dora’s incredible work in Mapapa. Recently, Dora was awarded the ‘Zee Woman in Education’ award at the #ZeeWomenBankingAwards2024 Zambia National Commercial Bank (Zanaco) PLC in Zambia. We are so happy she is being recognized as the exceptional woman she is.
One of the critical issues we tackled in ‘We Rebuilt a Village’ was the water scarcity that plagued the village. Most importantly, there is a lack of clean drinking water. Before our intervention, the village relied on a shallow borehole that frequently dried up and was prone to contamination. This situation would have Dora making frequent trips to fetch water almost two hours away in an unreliable and safety-hazardous vehicle prone to breakdowns in isolated areas. Dirty water could often lead to health issues like skin infections and countless other water-born illnesses. By providing a deep, properly maintained well, we ensured a steady supply of clean water, significantly improving the community's health and quality of life.
Introducing the Starlink.
With access to electricity, we also introduced Starlink, providing reliable internet connectivity. This connectivity opened up educational resources for the children and supported Dora's efforts in managing and expanding the orphanage. Now that they have reliable communication with the outside world, they are no longer as isolated as they had been in the case of an emergency.
But most importantly for Dora, being a TikTok star means a whole lot more when it directly impacts the lives of hundreds of children. Using her social media platform, she generates most of her funding to provide for the village of Mapapa, and before introducing Starlink, she would have to stand for hours in different places only to hope that her short video would be posted.
Just to give you an understanding, if she were to view one of our films before, she would have to drive to a town to see it. When we posted ‘We Rebuilt a Village’, we were so happy to get her reaction instantly after uploading and have her be witness to the film getting to #4 on global trending within a matter of hours.
Dora's story is one of relentless dedication and hope. Although she had the opportunity to lead a different life, she chose to devote herself to the children of her village. Her orphanage continues to grow, and she faces new challenges.
