IF WE REALLY WANT TO MAKE FRIENDS AND KEEP THEM, WE MUST LEARN TO ABIDE BY THE RIGHT RULES OF ENGAGEMENT!
The passage, ‘Don’t visit your neighbours too often, or you will wear out your welcome’ (Proverbs 25:17 NLT), reminds those of us who, because we tend to fall into the trap of focusing exclusively on big stuff like world evangelism, spiritual gifts and the second coming of Christ, end up neglecting the seemingly small things like common courtesy that, if we really want to make friends and keep them, we must learn to abide by the right rules of engagement. So here are 5 rules for being a good guest: 1) Be considerate of other people’s time, do not interrupt when others are talking or try to dominate the conversation; 2) Always arrive on time, observe set times for visit and be courteous and congenial without being patronising; 3) Help with cleaning and where visits last more than a day, take your hosts out for a meal; 4) On getting home, send a note of appreciation for the gift of their time and kindness; and 5) When your host yawns for the tenth time, looks at his wife and says, ‘let us go to bed so these nice people can go home,’ know that you have outstayed your welcome.!FG. www.fgtalks.com
