Are we REALLY aligned as a team?

Alignment, not surprisingly, continues to be the focus of most of our team engagements this year.?

Simple enough! Right??

Well, it doesn't seem so – In 2015, researchers studied how strategy plays out in more than 400 organisations and were surprised. Rebecca Homkes, strategy expert and teaching fellow at London Business School, and MIT Sloan School senior lecturer Don Sull found that only one-third could name their organisation’s top three goals, and when given five tries, roughly 50% of senior managers could agree on the same one priority.

In 2023, Vikas Mittal, Alessandro Piazza and Ashwin Malshe found that actual strategic alignment among?500 employees, managers and executives was 2 - 3 times lower than perceived alignment. Once again, people thinking everyone is aligned on what the strategy is, yet in reality there is a wide difference in understanding.

And this is what we are seeing within teams, still?in 2024.?

Even the slightest misunderstanding, or differing perceptions (coming from potentially siloed thinking), will impact alignment. This in turn increases team conflict, slows?down progress, impacts employee engagement, retention and experience, not to mention the impact on business performance.
