Are we ready for a new wave of politicians?

What do a grandfather, a Nobel prize winner, and a high school teacher have in common?

They represent a new breed of political leaders in a world hungry for change to the status quo. Their track records and leadership styles are a stark contrast to the strongmen/women they are up against.

As we look globally at the events of the past week, from Bangladesh to Venezuela and the United States, one signal is clear – we are collectively seeking change. ?Even Venezuela’s sham of an election shows that a traditionally loyal supporter base can jump ship from a strongman to a self-proclaimed grandfather and former diplomat.

The news from Bangladesh shows the extent to which change is welcomed – and necessary. Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, known for his pioneering work in microfinance, will be leading an interim government. He was repeatedly targeted by ?Sheikh Hasina, the outgoing prime minister, who saw him as a threat. Yunus has a track record of providing economic opportunity and greater access to the poor. He once said that “Making money is a happiness. But making other people happy is a super-happiness.”

In the United States, Harris selected Tim Walz as her choice for Vice President. The governor of Minnesota is a former high school teacher. In an emotional opening statement, he remarked that Harris’ ticket is “bringing back the joy.”

These three men are united in their focus to driving change and their – dare I say it – a more “feminine” leadership style. While the outcomes remain unclear, and in the case of Venezuela, continuously devastating, I am encouraged by this show of character.

It takes courage to serve others. Isn’t that what government leadership should be about?

We're not just ready, we're aching for it! Interesting description of their leadership styles as "feminine". It made me pause to consider whether a female politician with could be perceived positively for displaying a "masculine" leadership style. I hope to see this new wave include more than just men.
