Are We Protecting Our Belongings More Than Our Families? A Look at Domestic Fire Safety in Malta

A heartbreaking story in Times of Malta shed light on a devastating fire caused by a tumble dryer, leaving a family to watch their home and memories go up in flames. It’s a stark reminder of how vulnerable we are to fires, especially in our own homes. Yet, despite an average of 1–3 domestic fires a day in Malta, many of us still fail to prioritise fire safety in our residences. Why is that?

As a Fire and Security company working across Malta’s domestic and commercial sectors, we’ve noticed a peculiar trend. When it comes to security alarms, the domestic market is thriving. People want to protect their homes from intruders and safeguard their treasured belongings, many of which hold sentimental value. But when it comes to fire alarms—systems designed to protect not just possessions but lives—there’s hesitation. Why do we stop short of protecting our families, particularly during the silent hours of the night when we’re most at risk?

A Personal Perspective: My Wife and the White UFOs

I vividly recall the moment I told my wife that I was installing fire alarms in every room of our home. She wasn’t exactly thrilled. To her, those little white UFO-shaped devices didn’t quite match the aesthetic of our décor. But as much as appearances matter, reason had to take precedence. Today, those “UFOs” are safeguarding not just our belongings but the lives of everyone in our household—our children, our family.

Why Don’t We Take Fire Alarms Seriously in the Domestic Sector?

Could it be a lack of awareness? Perhaps we underestimate the risk of a fire breaking out in our homes. Maybe it’s about cost, although fire alarms are far more affordable than many realise. Or is it simply about aesthetics—choosing the look of a room over life-saving technology?

What’s most concerning is that while we’re willing to protect a garage filled with tools and vehicles, the rest of the house—especially the rooms where our children sleep—remains unprotected. It feels as though we’re prioritising our possessions over the lives of our loved ones.

A Call to Action: Let’s Talk About This

This isn’t about selling fire alarms; it’s about starting a conversation. Why don’t we prioritise fire safety at home? Is it ignorance? Is it about cost or appearance? Or is it something else entirely?

I genuinely want to hear from you. What’s stopping you from installing fire alarms in your home? What would convince you to take that step? Let’s break the stigma and start protecting not just our belongings but our families.
