“Never deprive someone of hope; it might be all they have.”
?-- H. Jackson Brown Jr.?
In our last blog we talked about being authentic and its relationship to success in life and interviewing.? Part of that discussion involved the requirement for confidence and credibility in our interactions.? Sometimes those qualities come from seeking assistance from others, but why don’t we do it at times?? How is it viewed? Asking is important because of its impact on interviewing, and life in general.
A main emotion in interviewing that we need to pay attention to is fear.? Both the fear that the interviewee is experiencing, as well as the fear that you are experiencing in the interview room.? That fear can subvert success and production.? That fear can keep someone from telling you the truth. Are you prepared to recognize that fear when it appears and effectively address it?
Struggles and obstacles are a part of life that everyone deals with at some point or another throughout life. We can’t avoid them, and those events can generate fear.? The interview room can magnify those same fears we see in life and their presence can shut down any productive questioning.
It is incumbent on the interviewer to be prepared to instill hope.? Hope is central to getting to the truth. There must be a view of light at the end of the tunnel.? That hope reigns in fear and focuses the interviewee on the future and moving on. It shouldn’t have to be said, but this is true for life, much like interviewing.
This topic of hope is huge.? Look around, there is a scarcity of hope around us.? We need to be messengers of hope.? We need to recognize it in our interviewees, but also our co-workers, friends, family, and anyone that needs it.? I was traveling last week and found a fellow traveler who needed a portion of hope.? I had taught all day and could have immersed myself in busy work, but I chose to hear and respond.? And I likely did this because another friend had instilled some hope in me earlier in the week.? Another emotion connected to the Law of Reciprocity.? Please look for deployment opportunities of hope.
When hope is lacking or not actively cultivated, individuals may experience various negative consequences. Here are some potential outcomes when hope is lacking:
The absence of hope can have far-reaching negative effects on individuals, impacting mental and emotional well-being, motivation, resilience, social connections, and even physical health. It underscores the importance of fostering hope as a fundamental element for personal and collective flourishing.
“We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”
– Martin Luther King, Jr.
When it comes to gaining a confession or the truth from interviewees, fostering hope is a strategic and ethical approach. Here are several reasons why hope is important in the context of obtaining confessions or maximizing the receipt of truthful information:

It's important to note that while instilling hope is a valuable strategy, ethical considerations should always guide investigative practices. Unethical manipulation or false promises can lead to unreliable information and may undermine the credibility of the investigative process. Balancing the pursuit of truth with respect for individual rights and ethical principles is crucial in any interviewing context.
