Are We One? Are We Separate?

There is one innocent yet fundamental misunderstanding about who we truly are that almost every one of us has. That misunderstanding causes us to be unhappy, to feel a lack of meaning and purpose. It causes conflict within families. It’s the us versus them mentality, mood and activity in organizations.

We have absorbed it through cultural conditioning; none of us “made it up” all by ourselves!

What is it?

The belief that we are separate: not-one, but two or more, countless more.

Many say we are all connected. Many say we are all One.?

While at the same time believing we are separate. “Of course, I am separate from Timothy or Sarah. I’m over here. They’re over there.”

We can’t be separate – and One. We can’t be One – and separate. It’s one or the other but can’t be both.

We can cite all sorts of “evidence” to substantiate that we are separate.

Yet if we examine our experience, our personal intimate experience, we cannot find separation!

What difference does it make?

The belief in separation is the basis …?

of our unhappiness.

of our conflicts, i.e., wars, attitudes of us vs. them, oppression.

of the human activities that lead to the degradation of the earth.

It’s why …

we don’t experience purpose, meaning and fulfillment.

we’re dissatisfied.

we aren’t living the lives that we are being called to.

we aren’t accessing the infinite intelligence that can inform our approaches to our most difficult challenges.

How do we know if we believe we are One?

When we see “another,” we know (in our being, not intellectually) that we see ourselves.

We know that we are always talking to ourselves when it looks like we’re talking with “another.”

We treat “another” as if he or she is me.

We don’t believe the judgments that appear to us about ourselves.

We don’t worry about what is going to happen and whether you will do the right thing.

We know there’s not a separate self in a body running our life.

We no longer seek a relationship, activity or substance to be satisfied.

We no longer avoid a relationship, activity or circumstance to be satisfied.

What are some of the implications of knowing and living as the OneBeing we are?

Dramatically reduced wasted time, energy, creativity and productivity in the workplace due to the internal conflicts, posturing and need for control. Then innovation, agility, psychological safety and high performance become free to be experienced and expressed.

Dramatically reduced – if not eliminated – suffering in our personal lives. We are able to disregard the “noise” that keeps us from living and expressing what we are here to live and express. We experience purpose, meaning, belonging, happiness, freedom.?

Are we One? Or are we separate?

Ask yourself – look to your direct intimate experience, not thoughts about your experience:

Am I able to separate anyone from experience?

Am I able to separate anything from experience?

Am I able to separate experience from myself?

No?

Once we accept that we cannot separate anything or anyone from our experience, we can stop “listening to” anything that tries to tell us something different from our direct experience!

And begin to live and work in the ways our hearts know is possible. Living as the OneBeing we truly are.

Instead of listening to our beliefs, we can discover the truth through our own, immediate experience.

Keep returning to the questions above. We have been conditioned to engage with life in ways other than what our experience reveals to us as true. Over time, as you return to these questions over and over and over it will “sink in” that there is no separation.

Both the teachers of all great wisdom traditions and the scientists tell us this truth. It is not spirituality. It is reality.

If you would like support to live who you truly are and to experience and express the inherent peace, fulfillment, love and joy that you are, there are three ways that we can work together as you feel called:

And as you say: don't try to believe or think your way into any of this. Only the direct experience of it produces a shift. ??
