We need urgent action to curb harm from mis-and disinformation and hate speech.

The spread of hatred and lies online is causing grave harm to our world.

Misinformation, disinformation and hate speech are fueling prejudice and violence - exacerbating divisions and conflicts, demonizing minorities and compromising the integrity of elections.

Opaque algorithms are pushing people into information bubbles and reinforcing prejudices including racism, misogyny and discrimination of all kinds.

Threats to information integrity are not new, but they are proliferating and expanding with unprecedented speed on digital platforms. AI technologies are supercharging their trajectory.

Science, facts, human rights, public health and climate action are under attack.

Today, I presented a starting point for solutions: the United Nations Global Principles for Information Integrity.

These five principles are based on an overriding vision of a more humane information ecosystem:

  • societal trust and resilience;
  • healthy incentives;
  • public empowerment;
  • independent, free, and pluralistic media;
  • transparency and research.

These global principles are the result of broad consultations with countries, youth leaders, academia, civil society, the private sector including tech companies, and the media.

They are rooted in human rights, including the rights to freedom of expression and opinion. And they call for an information environment that champions human rights and a sustainable future

.

I urge governments, the tech sector, and other actors to listen to their people around the world – and respond.

Big tech companies should take responsibility and acknowledge the damage their products are inflicting on people and communities. They have the power to mitigate harm, changing business models that profit from disinformation and hate.

Advertisers and the public relations industry should stop monetizing harmful content. Brands should demand transparent in digital advertising and know where their ads are being places. Agencies should look for clients who are not misleading people and destroying our planet.

Media outlets should raise and enforce editorial standards to safeguard our future by providing quality journalism based on facts and reality.

And finally, governments must uphold human rights, including the right to freedom of opinion and expression, and to creating and maintaining a free, viable, independent, and plural media landscape.

These principles aim to empower people to demand their rights. They aim to empower parents, anxious for their children. To elevate the voices of young people, whose future relies on information integrity. To support civil society and academia, who are pushing for change. To spotlight public interest media, striving to convey reliable and accurate information.

Everyone should be able to express themselves freely without fear of attack.

Everyone should be able to access a range of views and information sources.

No one should be at the mercy of an algorithm they don’t control, which was not designed to safeguard their interests.

My message is clear:

The UN hears your calls for guidance and support.

Don’t lose heart – raise your voices.

Demand accountability; demand choice; demand control.

UN staff never reported on the dangerous conditions refugees faced in refugee camps in Sudan. As a whistleblower, I tried to highlight these serious human rights violations, but instead of being listened to, I was targeted and put in danger by the very people who had a duty to protect refugees. This reaction by the UN constitutes a flagrant breach of their professional and humanitarian obligations. Today, the consequences of this negligence are tragic. The Sudanese, fleeing violence and persecution in their own country, became refugees in Ethiopia. There, instead of finding refuge and safety, they face acts of vengeance from the Ethiopians, thus exacerbating their suffering. This situation is taking place under the supervision of the UN, whose mandate is precisely to protect refugees and guarantee their fundamental rights. Unfortunately, the UN has not taken the necessary measures to document these abuses and intervene effectively. . Their silence and inaction allowed the violence to persist, putting the lives of thousands of vulnerable refugees at risk. This lack of accountability and transparency on the part of the UN is not only a betrayal of the principles on which the organization is founded.

Mr. Guterres, I want to contact you on this number: 00966594471226. I am in a dire situation. I want resettlement, and the nations in Riyadh are not responding to us. May God make you happy. Talk to me. Consider us your son.

You must be extremely frustrated Mr. Secretary-General as, despite your furtive and seemingly tirelessly leading humane efforts, no one seems to be listening to you and nothing is ever accomplished.
