We need to talk about "having it all"?

We need to talk about "having it all"

We need to talk about… “having it all”

For years when people asked me about “balancing” my home life with my work life, I just waved them away. I thought if I just kept working harder on both fronts, if I didn’t allow myself to complain about it, the problem would go away. Spoiler alert: I was wrong.

That’s why I was so struck by this New York Times headline, These 12 Women Don’t Want It All. They Want Better. Pollster Kristen Soltis Anderson moderated a focus group of 12 women ages 22 to 43 to discuss their thoughts on gender, marriage, motherhood, and feminism. Their responses vary as much as you might expect. But together, they tell a fascinating and not so surprising story: women, by and large, are rejecting the myth of "having it all.”

Anyone else realize way too late that having it all wasn’t what it was cracked up to be?

Graphic with a quote attributed to Reshma Saujani reads "Beneath the glossy, shimmering feminist promise of 'having it all'? is a dark truth that no one told me. 'Having it all'? is really just a euphemism for 'doing'? it all. At the top center is a Pay Up book logo.

Mom hero/ally of the week

Can we just take another moment to give it up for the U.S. women’s soccer players (many of whom are moms!) who successfully advocated for equal pay?

I love Eliza Anyangwe’s analysis of some of the lessons for pay equity advocates, including the importance of good leadership at the top, the power of public visibility and support, and that entities should be investing in women from the JUMP.

I don’t know about you, but these women have me feeling fired up for more workplace wins.

What can you do this week to change the future of moms and work?

  1. Pre-order my new book!!!! (I know, I know… Shameless plug. But I’m determined to make workplaces better, and I really believe this book can serve as a compass.) It’s out on March 15th. But as you may know, book pre-orders are crucial!
  2. Join me and Huma Abedin for a Pay Up book talk on March 1st at 4:30pm ET. R.S.V.P. here.
  3. Feeling fired up? Become a Pay Up advocate.

Yup, figured that out when I was roughly 4-5 years out of school and working full time and it became apparent there were simply not enough hours in the day to both pursue a fast-track career and be present and fully engaged in my family while also somehow taking care of myself. Left ambition behind, chose balance over “fast paced” and never looked back

Reshma Saujani If having it all is not the answer why are we pushing women into work force with young babies
