We need to solve more problems and get rid of dated terms like geriatrics, age, aging & caregiver.

We need to solve more problems and get rid of dated terms like geriatrics, age, aging & caregiver.

First off, inspite this photo envoking fond memories of a Disney movie and even more so the love of my dad who now resembles this character.

It is ageist, demeaning, and showing a narrative that is not necessary.

I am guilty as charged. I used to have a certification as a geriatric care manager, now the organization has rebranding itself as Aging Life Care Association.

I am guilty as charged. My first company. My care management business was called Geriatrics Life Care.

I understand that we have terms for practical meanings. Yes, the study of children, pediatrics is different than the study of geriatrics. I get this.

But I do think the time is now and will be even more important that we begin to use more appropriate language to describe what we are working on.

The word "Age" will at some time not be well accepted. Few identify as getting "old", see themselves as "old" or "Aging." The other term is "caregiver." So many people are caregiving and do not self identify.

Words do matter and they matter "how" you solve something.

The real need is to "solve" problems and regardless what it is. We all have that name we perfer to be called. What can we do to begin to describe what we are doing and solving for that does not demean those who we serve. If the end user does not like that word, "why" are we using it. So what are better words? Ask and they will tell you?

Michael Mann, MHA, your insights on language in caregiving are spot-on. As a fellow advocate for 'Aging in Place,' I believe empowering terminology is key. We're not just caregivers; we're supporters of continued independence and dignity. Let's lead this change together, crafting a narrative that celebrates life's every stage.

Thought provoking post! A new term for caregiver??? HMMMM. Honor calls their team Care professionals “Care Pro’s”. It will be interesting to see which terms pop up.
