We need a simpler language for "blockchain" and "security jargon"

In my first year of a Ph.D. at Yale University, almost seventeen years ago, I remember attending a Security conference for the first time. I returned from the conference feeling frustrated - the presenters prided themselves on using obscure technical jargon, and sketching complex proofs that they expected the audience to understand.

I went to speak to one of the Yale faculty members, who has been a tenured professor for over 30 years, and confided to him that I felt like the dumbest guy in the room. I still remember that conversation vividly to this day; he told me : “Alex, if the talk is too hard to understand, it’s not because you are dumb. It’s because a presenter is doing a bad job explaining it. Most of the people, nodding their heads in the audience don’t get it either, but they are afraid to admit it."

Since that day, I’ve strived to make my talks as simple to understand as possible. I also have never been shy to say in public, during a meeting: “ I am sorry - I just don’t understand it. Can you elaborate?"

I believe that we are doing a dis-service to IT Security industry (and to the cryptocurrency and blockchain communities) by not changing how we talk about security concepts. If we want to ensure mass adoption of “threat intelligence”, “endpoint security”, “blockchain”, “ethereum”, _____ (fill in the blank) — we need to make sure that these concepts are crystal clear to the general public. Just imagine that you get paid $100 for every word that you remove in a sentence that you write, without altering the sentence’s meaning. And you will do a better job communicating your startup’s next best idea, or your meeting’s thesis.

I took a stab at rewriting some of the commonly used definitions in simpler language:

  1. Old: "Threat Intelligence Platform (TIP) is an emerging technology discipline that helps organizations aggregate, correlate, and analyze threat data from multiple sources in real time to support defensive actions. New: Threat intelligence platform is a software that aggregates information about security threats.
  2. Old: The dark web is the World Wide Web content that exists on darknetsoverlay networks that use the Internet but require specific software, configurations or authorization to access. New : Dark web are websites that you can’t access with a regular browser.
  3. Old: Blockchain combines cryptography & distributed computing to deliver secure, direct peer to peer transactions without the need of a central party. Blockchain is a special instance of a Distributed Ledger Technology. New : Blockchain allows untrustworthy parties to agree on a set of records ("ledger") by replicating these records on many computers.
  4. Old: Ethereum is an open-sourcepublicblockchain-based distributed computing platform and operating system featuring smart contract (scripting) functionality New: Ethereum allows the same program to run on everybody's computer, and prevents that program from being modified (except by a program itself).
  5. Old:smart contract is a computer protocol intended to digitally facilitate, verify, or enforce the negotiation or performance of a contractNew: Smart contract = software that automatically enforces conditions when, for example, somebody will be paid.

This great and very helpful. I will be using your definitions in many of my future conversations about security.

It's good to see a leader with many acronyms after his name with the ability to spell out the many acronyms in a complex industry.
