‘We need a Minister for water safety,’ says fire chief

Hi Reader,

In a week of heavy rain brought on by Storm Bert it seems apt to talk about water safety. It's a revelation to me that the government department responsible for flooding doesn't include drowning prevention in its brief.

CFO Dawn Whittaker KFSM leads on water safety at a national level and ahead of her imminent retirement from her service, she talks to me about why she thinks the government needs to change its approach. Find out more below.

I gave this interview and raise these issues as I think it’s vital that something more is done at a national policy level with government support to address the volumes of drowning fatalities in the UK every year, not only resulting in devastating impacts on families and communities, but also testing the availability of capacity to respond.
