The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is a living annual plant in the family Asteraceae, with a large flower head (capitulum). The stem of the flower can grow up to 3 metres tall, with a flower head that can be 30 cm wide. That is why Kansas in the USA is sometimes called the Sunflower State. To grow well, sunflowers need full sun.
These flowers are unique in that they have the ability to provide energy in the form of nourishment and vibrancy and attributes which mirror the sun and the energy provided by its heat and light. Sunflowers are known for being “happy” flowers, making them the perfect gift to bring joy to someone's or your day.
Sunflowers also symbolize worship and faithfulness in various religions because of their resemblance to the sun, which is associated with spiritual knowledge and the desire to seek light and truth. The Incas used sunflowers to symbolize the Sun God, and brought them to temples for worship
Annual sunflowers bloom during summer and into autumn. Sow new plants every few weeks and you'll enjoy non-stop flowers until the first frost. Perennial sunflowers bloom for a period of 8-12 weeks with some beginning as early as July and others finishing as late as October. A mature, blooming sunflower is a composite flower since it is made up 1,000 to 4,000 small individual flowers in each head. These individual florets are arranged in two, opposite helixes that begins at the center of the flowering head.
The sunflower is a monoecious plant (having both male and female flowers on the plant at the same time). This genus of flower has both perennial and annual species. Different varieties of sunflowers, range from fifty to five hundred centimeters in height.
The Bible says: " The fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, justice and truth (Ephesians 5: 9 ) Just as sunflower flowers produce oil, the believer who sets his sights on God shows his characters of goodness, righteousness and truth. Many of us forget to deadhead our sunflowers to squeeze the last of the blooms from them, thinking somehow that they are programmed to create their great spinning plates of flower and that is it. ... But annuals like sunflowers are programmed to flower and produce seed as quickly as possible before they subside
We can learn a lot of lessons from sunflowers and try to imitate their instinct to constantly seek sunlight, obtain nutrients, and grow in beauty and strength. But also remember that your true sun is not a star that you revolve around; it is within you, so look for it, pay attention to it, and follow its instinct. When Sun is not around that is during night time the flowers turn to each other and give each other energy sufficient to keep awake and wait for the Sun to rise again. This is the best learning for human beings that when they are in dark they need to help and support each other with our energy and then wait for positivity to come back to our lives.
