"We need education for a sustainable future.” My run for the SCASD School Board

Dr. Peter Buck Announces Candidacy for State College Area School District Board

STATE COLLEGE, PA – Dr. Peter Buck will be seeking election to the State College Area School District Board. With a deep commitment to the region, and passion for sustainability and education, Dr. Buck would be honored to serve the students and families of SCASD.

“The Pennsylvania Constitution requires a ‘thorough and efficient’ system of education. In SCASD, we need to make it more thorough and more efficient. We need advocates on our school boards who take on a comprehensive view of education in a changing world, and that support equitable outcomes for all children. We need education for a sustainable future.”

Dr. Buck’s experience lends itself perfectly to serving on the board. He is an award-winning educator with a PhD in Educational Theory and Policy from Penn State, comes from a family of educators, and is deeply connected to the region’s education system. Dr. Buck is currently the Academic Programs Manager for Penn State’s Sustainability Institute, and has an affiliate faculty position in Educational Theory and Policy. Over the last 4 years, Dr. Buck and his interns have collaborated with board members, teachers, facilities staff, and administrators in SCASD on education for sustainability, including developing educational materials for the LEED Platinum Corl Street Elementary School, faculty and staff surveys for elementary education, and a greenhouse gas inventory and climate-smart proposal for buildings and transportation.

Dr. Buck is also a proven public servant and leader, currently serving as President-Elect of the Pennsylvania Environmental Resource Consortium and the President of the Penns Valley Conservation Association. He also serves as the Co-Chair of Centre Region’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan and Technical Advisory Group and the Chair of Intergovernmental Solar Power Purchase Agreement Working Group. He has previously served as a Ferguson Township Supervisor (Chair), on the Spring Creek Watershed Commission, and in the Centre Region Council of Government.

Dr. Buck was born and raised in State College, graduated from State High in 1994, and has lived here for most of his life. He lives in Lemont with his son Sacha, who is an 8th grader in the Delta program.
