We Must Condemn Racism in Every Form
Every American committed to the fundamental values of our country must be appalled by and join in condemning the rising wave of racist attacks against the Asian community, which yesterday took a horrific and deadly turn in Atlanta. As with the assaults on Black Americans and other minorities, we have a moral and ethical responsibility to raise our voice against every instance of racism and bigotry.
In a year that was marked by countless acts of heroism and selflessness in the fight against COVID-19, we cannot allow ignorance and imagined grievances to degrade our common humanity and the solidarity that is central to the resilience of our democracy.
In one of the most thoughtful discussions of the shared costs of racism and bigotry to appear this year, political commentator Heather McGhee forcefully argues in her new book, The Sum of Us, that racism holds all of us back, regardless of race. With all of the lessons we have learned in the past year about the importance of resilience in all its forms, we have seen that we cannot be a truly resilient society for as long as certain groups are held back, oppressed, and deprived of realizing their full potential.
While no one person or institution can solve racism, each of us can do something and be part of the solution. In the same spirit of the Black Lives Matter movement, we can no longer be silent on attacks on any minority communities. It is time for us to speak out and pledge our support to those communities. Reach out to friends and colleagues, contact your political representatives, support minority-owned businesses, do whatever you can to show your solidarity. Remember: all that is required for racism to prevail is for good people to remain silent.

3 年Ronald O'Hanley Part 2. You as Chairman & CEO of state Street, you destroyed black, brown and black women's lives than any other Chairman & CEO, these employees stood up and spoke out against systemic racism, bigotry, discriminatory promotions, pay inequality, and the environment of constant harassment within State Street Corporation, as good people they refused to remain silence in view of these abuses to let racism to prevail, they addressed these issues during the open meeting organized by Black professionals in which you attended as this organization's sponsor before you became chairman & CEO ; once in power, you discrimnatelly fired all these employees who were brave enough to speak up about these abuses. So your message in this post is totally contradictory sir, you cannot speak at both side of your mouth. #racism, #statestreet,#asianamericans

3 年Thanks Ron for this post. It is very inconceivable to see what transpired in Atlanta; as parent, I simply cannot comprehend the trauma caused to these children who have to grow up without their mothers, and the difficult responsibility their husbands, boyfriends and relatives have to raise their children during this very difficult time, my sincere prayers go out to the families left behind. While I agree with some of your points made here, I however strongly disagree with the premise that noone person or institution can solve racism; yes one person can solve racism by the way he or she treats those working around him or her, equally one institution can solve racism by the tone, and policies free of systemic racism set up by its Chairman and CEO and communicated and practiced across the organization. let us examine how your own actions contradict what you posted here, You mentioned I quote," we must condemn racism in every form, true, We cannot longer be silent on attacks on any minority communities, that all that is required for racism to prevail is for good people to remain silence, very true, now you as Chairman & CEO, your own actions when you took office, were the most racism actions that anyone CEO ever taken.
